The long wait is over, we can now officially bet on the NFL again. Well, sort of. Preseason still counts! Fans starving for action will get a taste of the football they've been craving when the Los Angeles Chargers and Detroit Lions meet on Thursday night in Canton, Ohio.
While you won't get to see Jared Goff vs. Justin Herbert battling, there are several intriguing matchups of rookies and other backups looking to earn their spots. Trey Lance should get a lot of run for the Chargers, and rookies like Omarion Hampton and Tre Harris will look to impress on national TV.

Chargers vs. Lions Moneyline Odds
The Detroit Lions are a slight favorite at -135 odds on the moneyline, with the Los Angeles Chargers coming in at +110 odds. We would probably see the Lions as a heavier favorite in the regular season, but with stars on both teams sitting out, this is really a toss up in Canton.
Chargers vs. Lions Total Odds
The total for this NFL Hall of Fame Game is Over/Under 32.5. It's a pretty typical number for a preseason. The last three hall of fame games have gone over that total, but four of the six before that were unders. There is rarely methodical drives down the field in these early preseason games, so the total will likely be impacted by any big plays/busted coverages down the field that lead to sudden scores.

Los Angeles Chargers Season Outlook
The Chargers have a slightly lower win total than the Lions at 9.5. They have a top-10 schedule difficulty, having to take on the Chiefs and revamped Broncos several times. They also have to meet the NFC East once each, and have other challenges against the Dolphins and Texans later in the year.
Jim Harbaugh loves to run the rock, and he'll have his opportunity to do so this year with the rookie out of UNC, Omarion Hampton. They also added Najee Harris in the offseason, who was expected to be the starter before a fireworks accident damaged his eye. His timetable for return is still up in the air at this point.
The wide receiver corps also got a boost with Ole Miss rookie Tre Harris, as this was one of the most lacking groups in the NFL last year outside of Ladd McConkey. Justin Herbert is certainly the guy to keep leading this franchise, but will need these fresh weapons to step up. Quentin Johnston couldn't drop any more balls than he did a year ago, and will get one last chance to redeem himself in 2025.
People also forget the Chargers had one of the top ranked defenses last year under Jesse Minter, giving up just 18.5 ppg (2nd in NFL). They did lose Joey Bosa, but have younger studs to fill that gap. They may not steal the AFC West division away from Mahomes and the Chiefs, but they are in much better shape than they were a year ago, and should compete for a playoff spot (-132 odds to make it).

Detroit Lions Season Outlook
The Lions are saddled with the third-hardest schedule in the NFL, and they'll have to do it with brand new coordinators on both sides of the ball.
Call me a hater, but the vast majority of the lift in the last few seasons was Dan Campbell allowing his stud coordinators go to work with their talented roster. He is not the mastermind behind the offensive scheme. Campbell may inspire toughness and resilience into his squad and run the culture around the franchise, but he is not individually responsible for winning many of their close games.
The fact that the Lions are still baiting bettors with a 10.5 win total despite all of the turnover on this coaching staff is eye-popping. They have a rough road ahead in 2025, and there will be a lot of adjustments taking place. Sure, Jared Goff will still be feeding a stacked offense, but the spirit and genius behind it is gone.
Expect some early bumps in the road for Detroit. The Lions' season begins with matchups against the Packers, Bears, and Ravens, and then follows a few weeks later with the Bengals, Chiefs, and Bucs. They can and should easily lose half of those. It doesn't get a whole lot easier down the line, and while they should find a playoff spot (-185 odds), it'll be much harder to win the NFC North and fight for a Super Bowl compared to the chance they had a year ago.
