I am going to be taking one of the best, if not the best, hitter in baseball today, Shohei Ohtani to go over his total bases prop and climb his ladder. I love his matchup with Austin Gomber and the Rockies, especially with all the hard contact Gomber has given up this season (ranks in the 6th percentile in total barrels this season). Although Gomber is having some success as of late, I think he's due for a rough outing, and could see it coming against the best lineup in baseball in the Dodgers.
With this game being a Sunday game, that usually means we get day games and that's exactly what Shohei will be playing today, which is great news according to his stats. Ohtani is absolutely dominating in Day Games this season (and he also did last season) with a .386 batting average and a .314 ISO. He also is hitting extremely well at home against left-handed pitching as he has a .341 batting average and .268 ISO. He is starting to make great contact again with his last eight batted balls being hit over 92 MPH exit velocity.
Historically, Ohtani has had a ton of success against Austin Gomber. In two matchups, he has gone 2-for-3 with a triple and 1-for-3 with a home run. Gomber likes to throw lefties primarily his 4-seam fastball and slider, both of which Ohtani hits well (off lefties). He has .301 and .336 expected averages and .657 and .387 expected slugging percentages against these pitches (vs. lefties).
We've seen Ohtani go over 1.5 total bases in four of five Sunday home games with 5+ total bases in two of those games (three home runs). I think there's a good chance we could this trend continue and see Ohtani max out his total bases ladder today.
