5 minTennessee vs. Houston Prediction: Can LJ Cryer, Cougars Lock Down Tennessee, Advance to Final Four?
In the chalk Elite Eight matchup in the Midwest Region, No. 1 seed Houston and No. 2 seed Tennessee meet this afternoon in Indianapolis.
Houston survived a furious late push from Gonzaga in the Round of 32 (81–76), and then needed to dial up the best inbounds play I’ve ever seen to edge Purdue at the buzzer, 62–60. LJ Cryer’s 30 points powered them past the Zags, while Milos Uzan’s 22 points and 6 assists were crucial in the Purdue win.
Tennessee has handled business without too much sweat in each of their tournament games. In the Round of 32, UCLA was in jail offensively and the Vols won 67–58. In the Sweet 16 vs. Kentucky, Tennessee avenged their two earlier season losses vs. their SEC foe, seizing control early on their way to a 78–65 victory.
The total for this one is the lowest of the tournament so far at 124.5 — and for good reason. This game should be an absolute slugfest. Every halfcourt possession will feel like a cinderblock chess match. Houston and Tennessee are both top-three in defensive efficiency and rank in the top 15 in slowest tempo nationally.

Tennessee vs. Houston Prediction
Houston just survived a gauntlet of elite point guards in Purdue’s Braden Smith and Gonzaga’s Ryan Nembhard — plus two of the best offensive minds in the game in Matt Painter and Mark Few — and two of the most skilled post players in the country in Trey Kaufman-Renn and Graham Ike.
Tennessee boasts an elite point guard in Zakai Zeigler, who is in the top six nationally in assist rate, just like Smith and Nembhard. Houston’s defensive identity relies on aggressive hard hedge ball screen defense and post traps to get the ball out of their opponent’s best players’ hands, and trusting their rotations and connectivity. Having bigs who are comfortable scoring or passing out of the short roll, point guards who can drag out the hedge and make good decisions, and catch-and-shoot three-point options who can knock down shots and/or attack closeouts off skip passes are the best ways to score on Houston.
Zeigler is a good enough facilitator to make plays and handle the traps, but he also is turnover-prone (21.2% TO rate, 7th worst in the SEC). While Chaz Lanier is an elite scorer and 3-point shooter, he’s the only guy the Volunteers have who actually scares you from behind the arc. Igor Milicic is a skilled big who can pass the ball, but he’s nowhere near the threat of Ike or Kaufman-Renn.
All this to say, I do think Tennessee will be much easier for Houston to guard than Gonzaga and Purdue were. Of course, it will be more difficult for Houston to score.
The reason I’m more confident in Houston’s offense here is because even though each halfcourt possession will be quite the challenge for them to score as well, Houston has three guards who shoot 42% or better from deep, a really tough post scorer in J’Wan Roberts, plus a relentless pursuit of offensive rebounds (11th in the country in OReb%) — where I think they can put together enough points to win and cover here.
This game should be an absolute dogfight, but I definitely have more confidence in Kelvin Sampson and these Houston players to get this done today.
