Illinois Fighting Illini vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers Prediction

Illinois has quietly been one of the hottest teams in the country over the last two months, riding a ten game winning streak that includes three road victories. This is not a team simply feasting on home court or weak opponents. The Illini are playing confident, connected basketball, and they are doing it with an offensive profile that travels well.

At the core of that success is the best offense in the nation, according to KenPom. Illinois plays fast, spaces the floor, and fires from deep at a massive volume, taking over half of its shots from three. But this is not a one dimensional shooting team. Even when the perimeter shots are not falling, Illinois has a built in safety net that very few teams can match. The Illini crash the glass relentlessly, ranking among the best teams in the country in offensive rebounding rate. Missed threes often turn into extended possessions, second chance points, or trips to the foul line.

That ability is driven by the frontcourt pairing of David Mirkovic and Tomislav Ivisic. Mirkovic has been a matchup nightmare all season, contributing as a scorer, passer, and rebounder while also stretching defenses with legitimate three point shooting. Ivisic adds another layer of spacing and size, forcing opposing bigs to defend in space and move laterally, something Nebraska’s frontcourt may struggle with.

Illinois also deserves more credit on the defensive end. This is a disciplined group that limits high percentage looks inside and does an excellent job contesting shots without fouling. In fact, the Illini lead the country in avoiding self inflicted mistakes, particularly by not sending opponents to the free throw line. That level of control matters significantly in a road environment.

The backcourt situation has also stabilized nicely. When Kylan Boswell went down, there were legitimate concerns about ball handling and shot creation. Keaton Wagler has answered those questions emphatically. He has stepped into a larger role and delivered elite scoring performances while also keeping the offense organized. His ability to create off the dribble and make reads out of the pick and roll gives Illinois a steady hand in late clock situations. Nebraska is a good team and deserves respect, especially at home. The Cornhuskers can score in bunches and shoot the ball extremely well when they are in rhythm. However, their margin for error is thinner. Nebraska relies heavily on shooting efficiency and does not attack the offensive glass. When shots are not falling, there is no secondary avenue to manufacture points. That becomes a concern against an Illinois team that thrives on second chances and constant pressure.

There are also signs that Nebraska’s perimeter defense may be due for regression. The Huskers allow a high volume of three point attempts and have benefited from opponents missing more than expected. Against an Illinois offense that shoots with confidence, volume, and rebounding support, that trend is difficult to rely on.

Ultimately, this game comes down to flexibility. Illinois can win in multiple ways. Nebraska largely has to win one way. On the road, against a disciplined opponent that does not beat itself and keeps possessions alive, that difference matters. I am backing the team with more paths to victory.
