5 Minute ReadNew Mexico State vs. Sam Houston Prediction: Can Bearkats Pull Slim Upset on Wednesday Night?
New Mexico State visits Elliott T. Bowers Stadium for an 8:00 PM ET Conference USA matchup on ESPN2. The Aggies enter at 2-4 and 1-1 in league play, while Sam Houston sits at 1-5 and 0-2 after losing five of its first six games.
New Mexico State is favored by 3 points with the total sitting at 47. The Bearkats have scored only six combined points in their first two CUSA games, but their defense has quietly improved enough to make catching a full field goal at home much more appealing than the offensive results initially suggest.
New Mexico State vs. Sam Houston Recent Results
New Mexico State Aggies (2-4), (1-1 CUSA)
New Mexico State has not played since a 22-3 loss at FIU on October 7. The Aggies committed three turnovers, failed to score a touchdown and produced their lowest point total of the season.
James Jones remained productive despite the loss, rushing for 89 yards and adding three receptions. He enters Wednesday with 599 rushing yards on 92 attempts, averaging 6.5 yards per carry and just under 100 rushing yards per game.
The FIU performance came immediately after New Mexico State's best game of the season. The Aggies beat Western Kentucky 34-13 behind 206 rushing yards, six sacks and a defensive touchdown, showing a much higher ceiling than the offense displayed in Miami.
New Mexico State has had 13 days between games after playing three times in a 12-day span. That rest advantage gives the Aggies additional preparation time before their fourth road game of the season.
Sam Houston Bearkats (1-5), (0-2 CUSA)
Sam Houston enters on a three-game losing streak after falling 16-3 at home against Western Kentucky. The Bearkats were held to 177 total yards and only 112 through the air, extending an offensive drought that has become the biggest problem on the roster.
The defense deserved a much better result. Sam Houston held WKU to only 276 total yards and 3.7 yards per play while keeping the Hilltoppers out of the end zone for the final three quarters.
That followed a 35-3 loss at Liberty in which the Bearkats again struggled offensively but ran into a Flames team that rushed for 297 yards. Sam Houston has now gone 10 consecutive quarters without scoring a touchdown.
Landyn Locke still gives the offense some explosive potential. He has thrown for 1,418 yards and 11 touchdowns, and his touchdown passes have averaged more than 34 yards. The recent issue has been finding enough sustained drives around those occasional explosive plays.
New Mexico State vs. Sam Houston Head to Head
New Mexico State leads the all-time series 2-1, with the home team winning all three previous meetings.
- October 2, 2025: New Mexico State 37, Sam Houston 10
- September 21, 2024: Sam Houston 31, New Mexico State 11
- October 11, 2023: New Mexico State 27, Sam Houston 13
Last season's meeting remained competitive through three quarters. Sam Houston pulled within 13-10 on the final play of the third before New Mexico State scored 24 unanswered points in the fourth quarter.
The venue matters more than the small historical sample. Sam Houston won the only previous meeting played in Huntsville by 20 points, and Wednesday gives the Bearkats another opportunity to protect home field against an Aggies team that is 0-3 on the road this season.

New Mexico State vs. Sam Houston Line Movement and Betting Splits
Sam Houston opened closer to +2.5 before the market moved to +3. The total has fallen much more aggressively, opening around 49.5 before dropping into the 46.5 to 47 range.
The spread splits favor New Mexico State by ticket count, but the money distribution is less decisive. The Aggies are receiving 71% of spread bets but only 57% of the handle, while Sam Houston has 43% of the money on only 29% of tickets.
That means the average spread wager on Sam Houston is significantly larger than the average New Mexico State wager. The total split is even more pronounced, with the Under receiving 84% of the handle despite only 53% of bets at 46.5.
Moneyline action is relatively balanced. New Mexico State has 57% of tickets and 55% of the handle, compared with 43% of bets and 45% of money on Sam Houston.
New Mexico State vs. Sam Houston Prediction
Sam Houston's offense makes any Bearkats wager uncomfortable. Six points over the last two games and 10 consecutive quarters without a touchdown are difficult numbers to overlook, especially against a New Mexico State defense capable of generating pressure.
The Aggies have 15 sacks through six games, while Sam Houston has allowed 17. New Mexico State also held Western Kentucky to 46 rushing yards, so the Bearkats cannot assume the ground game will suddenly provide an easy solution.
The reason to take +3 starts on the other side of the football. Sam Houston's defense has made substantial progress and is allowing only 338.2 total yards per game, an improvement of more than 145 yards from last season. The Bearkats are also fourth nationally at just 137.8 passing yards allowed per game.
That creates a difficult matchup for a New Mexico State offense averaging 230.5 passing yards. The Aggies should lean heavily on Jones, but Sam Houston does not need to shut the offense down completely. It needs enough stops to prevent this from becoming the type of fourth-quarter avalanche that decided last year's meeting.
FairPlay AI provides additional support for that approach. The internal projection makes New Mexico State only a 0.5-point favorite with a 51% win probability, while Sam Houston sits at 49%. The sportsbook is dealing New Mexico State -3, creating roughly 2.5 points of projected value toward the Bearkats.
FairPlay AI also projects a total of 49, slightly higher than the current market, but the more relevant piece for this wager is how close it views the teams. A near 50-50 matchup being priced at a full field goal creates meaningful cushion on the home underdog.
Sam Houston's offensive ceiling has not completely disappeared. Locke remains second in Conference USA in passing yards per game and tied for second with 11 touchdown passes. His recent production has been poor, but the big-play ability that showed up earlier in the season still exists.
New Mexico State's rest advantage is the biggest situational concern. The Aggies had nearly two weeks to prepare while Sam Houston played Western Kentucky only seven days ago. New Mexico State should also enter with a clear plan for attacking an offensive line that has struggled in pass protection.
The number compensates for those concerns. Sam Houston can lose by exactly a field goal and produce a push, while any outright win or one-to-two-point loss cashes the wager. In a game the projection views as almost even and the market expects to be relatively low scoring, that protection matters.
New Mexico State vs. Sam Houston Best Bet
- Best Bet: Sam Houston +3 (-110) Check out these best odds at DraftKings Sportsbook
The Bearkats have been one of the least productive offenses in the country over the last two weeks, but the defense has improved enough to keep this from being treated like a conventional 1-5 team.
Sam Houston just held Western Kentucky to 276 yards, owns one of the nation's strongest pass defenses and is attracting a larger share of spread handle than its ticket count suggests. FairPlay AI makes New Mexico State only -0.5 compared with the sportsbook's -3, providing enough additional support to take the full field goal with the home underdog.
