Football is back! Fans of America's most popular professional sporting event can finally rejoice after five months without a game. This will be the first time the Hall of Fame Game falls in July since the Patriots blanked the 49ers on July 31, 2000, and we'll hope to see some solid action tonight when the Chargers and Lions square off.
Detroit will be without their rockstar offensive coordinator, as Ben Johnson left to become head coach of the Chicago Bears last offseason. John Morton will take over the role, and has some big shoes to fill with the trickery and variation that made Johnson's Lions a title contender.
What will we see in the first edition of the new-look Lions coaching staff? Let's take a look at the Chargers vs. Lions odds and prediction for the NFL Hall of Fame Game tonight as these teams get warmed back up and kick off the preseason.

Chargers vs. Lions Prediction
Based on Jim Harbaugh's early comments, we're going to get a heavy dose of the backups and rookies here, which isn't such a bad thing. With guys like Justin Herbert, Ladd McConkey, and the starting o-line out, we'll see some Trey Lance action, throwing to rookie WR Tre Harris and others.
DJ Uiagalelei will also make an appearance, with the former Florida State and Oregon State QB landing on the Chargers as a undrafted free agent. Many were surprised to see him get picked up, but Harbaugh is going to give the former Heisman candidate a chance despite his rough couple of seasons. That's the spirit of the preseason, every guy has a chance early on, and that's why we can't focus too much on the line and odds.
It's the preseason, and the first game no less, so it's not the spot to go crazy. But we are all certainly excited to have football back, so it's a great occasion to throw a few bets for fun. We're liking the Chargers and the under here in Canton, as the backups should spend most of the time on the field and working out the major offensive installments. There won't be a ton of big plays with the teams trying out new schemes and position players.
The last three Hall of Fame games went over the total, with the Bears taking down the Texans last year, 21-17. That trend should end here, especially with the amount of offensive talent on the bench for both teams. While it is the preseason and we can expect some coverage breakdowns, there should be a decent helping of conservative play-calling, especially from Harbaugh's side. Omarion Hampton and Tre Harris should make some plays for LAC, and the Chargers backups are better than the Lions front-heavy roster.
