Week 1 gives us an NFC North battle at Lambeau as the Green Bay Packers host the Detroit Lions. Detroit comes in as the public dog after last season’s playoff run, but I’m looking to back the new-look Packers to open the season with a statement win.
Green Bay’s defense was legit last season under DC Jeff Hafley—6th in points per drive allowed and 4th in defensive EPA per drive—and then they dropped a bombshell: trading for Micah Parsons. He signed a record deal and is “ramping up”; the team will decide his Week 1 usage, but even limited snaps tilt passing downs. That’s a massive edge against a timing QB like Jared Goff.

Lions vs. Packers Prediction
On offense, Jordan Love leads a unit that graded as a top-10 offense in 2024 by advanced efficiency. Green Bay can win multiple ways: Love’s play-action/RPO game plus a retooled ground attack with Josh Jacobs as the bell cow with Emanuel Wilson as support. That balance matters against Detroit’s front.
Detroit is a good team, no doubt, but there’s some volatility here. They lost offensive coordinator Ben Johnson to Washington, and while Jared Goff has been steady, he’s now facing a Packers defense that finished top 10 in yards per play allowed last year and just added one of the league’s most disruptive defenders in Parsons.
On top of that, Detroit’s secondary was one of their biggest weaknesses in 2024, giving up 31 passing TDs, tied for the 3rd-most in the league. That’s a problem against a Green Bay offense that ended last season averaging over 29 points per game in their final five contests.
Green Bay is definitely a pros versus joes type of play to start the season with sharp money all over the Pack. With Lambeau Field as the backdrop and weather not expected to be an issue, Green Bay checks every box: home field, QB advantage, defensive upgrades, and betting market alignment.
