2023 AT&T Byron Nelson First Round Leader Predictions, Picks: Can Jason Day, Adam Scott Start Fast?

Looking to become just the second player since 1930 to win his first three PGA Tour events at the same course, K.H. Lee returns to McKinney this week for the 2023 AT&T Byron Nelson. Next week, the season's second Major Championship arrives in New York, and this week’s field indicates as much. Outside of World No. 2 Scottie Scheffler, there are few big names in this week’s field, making the number of players who have a chance to find success higher than ever. 

A long-time regular on the PGA Tour, TPC Craig Ranch will once again host this week’s festivities, as the 4,468 Par 71 requires a mix of precision and distance for players who want to find success. It also requires stellar putting on Bentgrass, the green surface of choice. 

With Jordan Spieth out of this event with an injury, and Scheffler playing far from his best golf as of late, the field is wide open. Let’s take a closer look at a few guys I think could find success early.

Jason Day

Day has had a resurgence in his career over the past 12 months, and while he’s yet to find the winner’s circle in some time, his game is trending in the right direction. Though he hasn’t found much success here, with two starts of T51 and a Missed Cut, this course plays well to Day’s strong suits. Likely using it as a warm-up to next week’s main event. I like a focused Day on Thursday to go low. 

K.H. Lee

In his last two events here, Lee has been the best player in the field on both occasions and while I’m not sure he makes it three wins, he likely has the hot hand early. He also has momentum on his side, finishing the Wells Fargo last week with a Sunday 68, finishing T8 on the week in an event he played well in throughout. 

Definition of a horse for the course in addition to playing well as of late, and it’s hard to imagine a world where Lee doesn’t at least give himself a shot early. 

Adam Scott

Scott has certainly shown flashes of returning to his old self in the past 12 months, but he’s not quite been able to punch through to the other side. However, a T5 finish last week gave cause for optimism, as his putting was dialed in and in a stacked field to boot. With a rather weak field on hand this week, Scott finds himself as one of the biggest names in the event, and might just be able to get out to a hot start Thursday.
