How To Read British Open Betting Odds

Reading Open Championship odds could not be easier. If you’re already familiar with betting on other sports then you’ll already be familiar with how it works. In fact, it’s much simpler than many other sports as you only need to focus on one event rather than several month’s worth of games.

British Open odds are displayed as a list of golfers, each with a number next to them. Since most US sportsbooks use the American format by default, this number will either be three, four, or five digits long and will have a +/- before it.

You can easily work out which golfer has been given the best odds to win the British Open by looking for the smallest number.

If we look at three big names and their current Open Championship odds, we can see this in action:

● Dustin Johnson (+1100)

● Justin Thomas (+1400)

● Rory Mcllroy (+1600)

In this example, Dustin Johnson has the lowest number and, therefore, has the best odds. This makes him the favorite out of the three.

A $100 wager on Johnson would return $1,200 (your $100 stake + $1,100 winnings) while a $100 bet on Rory Mcllroy would return $1,700 (your $100 stake + $1,600 winnings).

Who is the betting favorite to win the 2021 British Open?

There are around half a dozen players with decent odds to win the British Open in 2021, though the favorite is currently Dustin Johnson.

As of early June 2021, the leading contenders with the best Open Championship odds are:

● Dustin Johnson +1100

● Jon Rahm + 1200

● Jordan Spieth +1200

● Justin Thomas +1400

● Bryson Dechambeau + 1600

● Rory Mcllroy +1600

● Brooks Koepka +2000

● Xander Schauffele + 2000

As we get closer to the event, these British Open odds will drift and shorten, depending on the myriad of factors that oddsmakers consider will affect each player’s chances of winning.

How To Bet The British Open Golf

The main way to bet on the British Open is to look at the outright market. Here, you’ll be able to compare which players have the best odds to win the British Open in 2021 and make your selection based on the odds and your predictions for the event.

Every player that is entered into the competition will have outright British Open odds, though players with higher handicaps and less experience at this level will have much worse odds than the favorites to win.

Outright British Open odds isn’t the only market we compare though. You can also bet on other futures such as which players will be leading after each round, the top five, top ten, and even top twenty.

As we get closer to the start of the tournament, sportsbooks will also begin offering odds on prop bets like how many holes in ones will be made during the event. Other popular prop bets include the nationality of the winner, whether there will be a playoff, and whether the winner of the British Open will be a first-time Major Champion. For bets like these, you’ll need to consider several extra factors before you check the British Open odds.

No matter what you want to bet on, at OddsChecker, we will be comparing Open Championship odds for all of the different British Open markets. We check all of the leading sportsbooks in the United States, so you can be sure you’re getting the best value on every bet you place.

To help you get even more from your betting, we’ll also be bringing you daily expert golf picks which you can use to get inspiration for your wagers. That’s not all though, we also compare all of the best free bet offers available from US sportsbooks that you can use to make your money go even further.

British Open Golf Betting Strategy

As with any golf tournament or sporting event, there are numerous different factors that you need to consider. It isn’t necessarily just about looking at the Open Championship odds and picking the favorite, as it isn’t always the player with the best odds that wins.

Of course, it is important to check the British Open odds, as this will give you a good indication of which players are more likely to win. While it isn’t impossible for a player with outright Open Championship odds of +200000 to be lightning the Claret Jug at the end of the tournament, it is highly unlikely.

In addition to checking the Open Championship odds, you’ll want to factor in each player’s previous form at the course. This year’s tournament will take place at Royal St. George’s Golf Club, so you’ll want to examine how each golfer has fared when they’ve played there in the past. Since the British Open hasn’t been hosted at the course since 2011, you’ll want to look at performance in other tournaments too.

Each player’s recent form is also important. If they’re at the top of their game, they’re much more likely to do well in the British Open than if they’ve been stuck in a rut.

FAQ

When is the 2021 British Open?

The 2021 British Open will take place between Sunday, July 11, 2021 and Sunday, July 18, 2021. It will be available to watch on TV, with coverage from NBC and the Golf Channel. The first two holes will be shown on the Golf Channel before moving to NBC. Alongside this, we’ll be providing updated British Open odds, along with picks and predictions throughout the competition so you never have to miss a moment.

What course is the 2021 British Open played at?

The 2021 British Open will take place at Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Sandwich, Kent. Located in the South East of England, Royal St. George’s has a long history of hosting the British Open. It will be the 149th time the competition has been held at the club since it became the first venue outside of Scotland to host the competition in 1894.

2021 will be the first time the Open Championship has returned to Royal St George’s since 2011. That year, Darren Clarke won the competition, followed by Dustin Johnson and Phil Mickelson. Having come close to victory then, Johnson has some of the best odds to win the British Open.

Who won the 2020 British Open?

The 2020 British Open was canceled. However, the 2019 British Open was won by Irishman Shane Lowry when the competition was held at Royal Portrush Golf Club in County Antrim, Northern Ireland.

Despite winning in 2019, Lowry doesn’t have the best Open Championship odds as the tournament is just on the horizon. However, having proven he can win in the past, you may see his current odds of +10000 as a great opportunity.

Will Tiger Woods play in the 2021 British Open?

Tiger Wood will not be taking part in the 2021 British Open. In February 2021, he was injured in a car accident and is still recovering.

What odds is Tiger Woods to win the 2021 British Open?

Due to injury, Tiger Woods will not be taking part in the Open Championship in 2021, therefore, sportsbooks are not offering British Open odds for the golfing legend.
