The ATP Masters Cincinnati has long been dubbed a premier event, which is evident by the field that has been amassed this week. Holger Rune has had a rough go of it of late. He was ousted in the second match of his last two tournaments (Montreal and Washington, D.C.) but lost in the first round of his six previous tournaments. He draws a tough assignment in the first round here in Cameron Norrie, who lost in the Round of 16 in Montreal, but made it to the finals at Los Cabos the tournament prior.
Norrie is 15-2 in his last 17 ATP main draw matches in the United States. He is typically a fast starter, winning the first set in 20 of his previous 25 ATP main draw matches. Though he has failed to cover the game spread in his last four matches, he has a distinct advantage over Rune, who is under .500 (10-11) on hard courts in his young career.
Norrie won the only career head-to-head meeting between these two, a three-set battle on clay at Lyon earlier this year. But Norrie even won four more total games than Rune in that match, and given that he is the much better hard-court player, we expect him to cover the -3.5 game spread here.

This first-round match between Denis Shapovalov and Grigor Dimitrov is one of the tournament's most anticipated opening round matches, as it pits two top 22 players against each other. Dimitrov owns a 2-1 career edge over Shapovalov, with both wins coming in straight sets on hard court and Shapovalov earning his only win on clay in Rome in 2020. Oddsmakers have this as a coin-flip match, but Dimitrov’s power has proven too mighty for Shapovalov on the hard court. And many question Dimitrov’s fitness at 31 years old to win an entire tournament, but that is not a worry in this match.Â
Shapovalov is 1-9 in his last ten ATP main draw matches, while Dimitrov has historically started fast in Cincinnati, winning the first set in 13 of his last 14 matches there. As a result, Dimitrov should be a bigger favorite in this one.
