Daniel Merida Aguilar vs. Learner Tien Prediction
Tien’s Montreal run started with a volatile 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 victory over Gael Monfils before his level improved considerably. He then dismantled Tommy Paul 6-3, 6-2 and followed with a 6-4, 6-4 victory over Thiago Agustin Tirante in the Round of 16. Tien has therefore won six of his past seven sets and is beginning to reproduce the consistency that helped him win the Geneva title earlier this season.
Merida Aguilar has been one of Montreal’s biggest revelations. He rallied past Liam Draxl 3-6, 6-4, 6-4, stunned Ugo Humbert 6-3, 6-3 and survived Alex Michelsen 6-4, 6-7(4), 6-1 before crushing Tallon Griekspoor 6-3, 6-1 in only 69 minutes. Those victories are particularly significant because Merida Aguilar arrived without a tour-level hard-court victory and has now won four straight on the surface. He also entered Montreal shortly after capturing the Umag title on clay, giving him nine victories across his past 10 matches.
This will be the first tour-level meeting between Tien and Merida Aguilar. Tien owns the more established hard-court résumé and can use his left-handed patterns, anticipation and compact counterpunching to expose any drop in Merida Aguilar’s shot tolerance. The Spaniard, however, has been striking through the court with increasing confidence and has already shown an ability to recover after losing sets against Draxl and Michelsen.
The stylistic matchup also creates a strong case for momentum swings. Tien is comfortable redirecting pace and forcing opponents to play extra balls, while Merida Aguilar has enough baseline weight to prevent the American from simply absorbing pressure all afternoon.
