Shelton has been outstanding in his title defense. The American defeated Jenson Brooksby 6-3, 7-5, overwhelmed Zizou Bergs 6-3, 6-2 and then eliminated Joao Fonseca 6-3, 7-6(3). He has won all six sets played and earned his 30th victory of the season against Fonseca, overcoming early breaks in both sets before taking control. Shelton already owns titles in Dallas, Munich and Stuttgart this season and is attempting to add a fourth trophy in Montreal.
Mensik’s route has required slightly more resistance, but his level has steadily improved. He opened with a 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 win over Jacob Fearnley, beat dangerous left-hander Terence Atmane 7-5, 6-4 and then handled Botic van de Zandschulp 6-4, 7-5. Mensik was three points from dropping the second set against Van de Zandschulp before winning three consecutive games, another display of the composure that has helped the 20-year-old establish himself as a Masters 1000-caliber player.
Mensik leads the head-to-head 2-1. Shelton won their first meeting at Indian Wells in 2024 by a 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 score, before Mensik answered with a 7-6, 4-6, 7-5 victory on the Auckland hard courts in 2025. Mensik then dominated their Madrid clay meeting 6-1, 6-4. Two of the three matches have therefore gone the full three sets, and Mensik has won five of the eight sets they have played overall.
Shelton’s serving numbers and left-handed power give him the stronger current profile, especially on a quick outdoor hard court where he can shorten points with his first delivery and forehand. Mensik counters with a massive serve of his own, exceptional first-strike power and evidence that Shelton’s patterns do not overwhelm him.
