Shelton enters as a -204 favorite, while Tien is +165 to reach his first Masters 1000 final. The defending champion has been the most dominant player left in Montreal, but Tien owns one of the most important matchup advantages remaining anywhere in the draw.
Tien is 2-0 against Shelton. He first beat him 6-4, 7-6(2) on grass in Mallorca last summer, then backed it up with a 7-6(3), 4-6, 6-3 victory on the outdoor hard courts at Indian Wells in March. The second result carries particular weight because it showed Tien could absorb Shelton’s power on a surface much closer to Montreal.

Tien has also earned his semifinal spot convincingly. He survived a strange 6-3, 0-6, 6-3 match against Gael Monfils before beating Tommy Paul 6-3, 6-2, Thiago Agustin Tirante 6-4, 6-4 and Daniel Merida 6-3, 6-2. He has now won six consecutive sets since the Monfils match.
Shelton has been even more dominant. He has not dropped a set all tournament, beating Jenson Brooksby 6-3, 7-5, Zizou Bergs 6-3, 6-2, Joao Fonseca 6-3, 7-6(3) and Jakub Mensik 6-3, 6-1. Against Mensik, Shelton hit 18 winners against only three unforced errors in a 73-minute demolition.
That form makes this meeting different from the previous two. Shelton is defending the biggest title of his career and currently looks far sharper than he did during the Indian Wells loss, when Tien was able to attack his serve and win the deciding set. Still, Tien’s return game and left-handed patterns have already proven capable of disrupting him twice.
Tien does not need to win the match for this matchup to become complicated. He has already taken two complete matches from Shelton and has lost only one set in Montreal, while Shelton is playing well enough that another straight-up upset is much harder to project this time.
