The dream is within touching distance for Lionel Messi as he seeks to add a World Cup to his collection of trophies. But Mbappe and co won’t be following that script and are looking to become the first back-to-back world champions since Brazil in 1962.
Argentina vs France Stats
- Argentina have been caught offside at least twice in four of their six matches
- France have conceded in five of their six matches so far and fortuitously kept their first clean sheet last time out against Morocco
- Argentina have hit the back of the net in every match leading up to this final
Argentina vs France Prediction:
Betting Tip: Argentina 2+ offsides
It all comes down to this as Argentina and France go to battle to decide who will be lifting the trophy and be crowned World Cup champions.
After a shock loss to Saudi Arabia in their opening match, Lionel Scaloni’s men have since gone on to win every single match and they seem to have grown into the tournament.
They’re full of willing runners who like to break in behind their opponents' backline into space but that often means they can do so too early. They’ve been caught offside twice or more in four of their six matches and five of France’s six opponents have seen the flag raised against them.
Argentina will need to be patient and pick their moments but the occasion, their intensity and willingness to play balls in behind leads me to think La Albiceleste are very likely to be flagged offside at least twice.
This market is largely priced up at around 8/13 elsewhere, but I like the 8/11 on this prop play and that will be my first selection.
Betting Tip: Both teams to score
The attacking talent on display here means that both defences have their work cut out. There are so many individual battles for both sides that will be a high priority but the best players always find a way.
Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappe are both team mates at club level and just an assist separates the two in the race for the Golden Boot. They’re both the stars for their respective nations and while they will be the ones considered the greatest threat, it’s also their ability to draw defenders in and create for their team-mates.
A single goal could be enough to open up this match and both are certainly more effective going forward than they are defensively. Current World Champions France have conceded in all but one of their matches so far this competition, keeping a clean sheet last time out against Morocco and they were lucky to do so.
But Argentina have not exactly looked solid in a defensive capacity and the fluidity of this French attack should not be underestimated. I’ll take both teams to score at just above evens.
