Open Championship 2025

I'm back with my key betting trends article for the final major of the golfing year, the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush.

My previous trends articles have been hugely successful with Schauffele coming out one of the joint top performers in the Open 2024 (winner), McIlroy coming out on top at the Masters (winner) and DeChambeau being the king of the PGA trends (runner up).

Last time out Jon Rahm was the trends pick who finished 7th so these are never far off.

10 of the last 11 winners of the Open Championship have come from inside the top 26 in the world rankings so for trends purposes we will whittle the field down to DataGolf's top 26 in their rankings.

In order of importance I have listed the following trends that really matter for an Open Championship. This time around I have put the trend they hit in green, and the trends they don't in red, rather than knocking them out completely when they miss a trend.

  • 4+ Open Appearances (10 of last 11)
  • 4+ Top10s this season (11 of last 11)
  • Open Championship top 10 finish (Nine of last 11)
  • Winner this season (Nine of last 11)
  • 32+ years old (Four of last seven)
  • Top 15 finish in either the 2 previous Majors (Eight of last 11)
  • Playing Scottish Open (Nine of last 13)

Open Championship Tips

The trends are listed in order of importance so despite being a tie between four (Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Tyrrell Hatton and Russell Henley), Hatton and Henley get the vote as they travelled further along the line before hitting a RED.  Therefore, Hatton (25/1) and Henley (66/1 on AK Bets) are our two trends picks for the Open in 2025.

Hatton's credentials are heightened significantly by the fact he was in the heat of the action during the final couple of holes at Oakmont last month. Already with two Dunhill Links prizes in the bag he holds all the aces to land a maiden major victory in Portrush.
