Injured Inspiral to reappear at Sandown?

John Gosden is leaning towards giving star filly Inspiral an outing in the Coral Heron Stakes at Sandown Park next month, reports Racing TV.

He said: “In the case of Inspiral, all being well, she will run in the Heron Stakes as a prep for the Coronation Stakes at Royal Ascot.

“She missed those critical eight to 10 days of training during trials week here and from that point of view I couldn’t run her at 80 per cent as that wouldn’t be very clever.

“It was a straightforward decision in the end not to run in the Guineas when you miss that period of training. You have got to be at full match fitness for a Guineas."

Flat Trainers’ champion targets missing Guineas title

Charlie Appleby is a short best price 1/2 to retain his Flat Trainers' Championship but has yet to win either of the Guineas.

The chances of Native Trail and Coroebus in the 2000 have been well publicised, but Appleby also believes he has a "live candidate" for the 1000 Guineas in Wild Beauty (12/1).

He said: “She brings some great form and I think the step up in trip from the seven to a mile, as we saw in Canada when she stepped up to the mile, she found further improvement. 

“In the trial over seven in the Dubai Duty Free she put up a brave performance and did it the right way round. We're confident going back up to the mile will see some further improvement from the trial.”

First of the Classics and start of a Triple Crown?

The British Classics are five races run during the traditional flat season, which includes this weekend's 2000 Guineas and 1000 Guineas as well as the Derby/Oaks at Epsom and St Leger at Doncaster.

  • In 1902 Sceptre became the only racehorse to win four British Classic Races outright, winning both Guineas, the Oaks and the St Leger
  • In 1868, Formosa won the same four races but dead-heated in the 2,000 Guineas
  • Outside of Sceptre and Formosa, eight horses have won the fillies' Triple Crown (1,000 Guineas – Oaks – St Leger), the last being Oh So Sharp in 1985
  • 15 horses have won the standard Triple Crown (2,000 Guineas, Epsom Derby & St Leger), the last being Nijinsky in 1970

 

Luxembourg, a fancy for both Andy Holding and Steve Ryder (see below) is 263/1 to become the first standard Tripe Crown winner for 52 years!

There is no doubt that Native Trial is a worthy favourite for the 2000 Guineas on Saturday but the question is whether he is backable at such a short price. 

The unbeaten son of Oasis Dream ended last season with two Group 1 victories in the National Stakes at the Curragh and the Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket with both of those races coming over 7f. 

He looked like a step up in trip to a mile would suit him well with this season as he always produced his best in the closing stages of races and that proved the case when he made a winning reappearance in the Craven Stakes at Newmarket earlier this month. 

Charlie Appleby has started this season in fantastic form and he has the two favourites in Native Trail and Coroebus with William Buick deciding to ride the unbeaten colt. 

Perfect Power made a winning reappearance in the Greenham Stakes but I have my doubts about him staying the mile and I think the biggest danger to the Godolphin pair will be the Aidan O’Brien trained Luxembourg. 

His trainer has won this race a record 10 times and he comes here unbeaten having won all three starts as a two-year-old. 

He justified favouritism in the Vertem Futurity Stakes at Doncaster and bids to follow in the footsteps of Kameko, Magna Grecia, Saxon Warrior and Camelot who all went on to win the 2000 Guineas the following season on their reappearance. 

At the prices I would prefer to back Luxembourg even though Native Trail does look like he will prove hard to beat in the first classic of the season.

Why Craven Stakes showed the strength of Native Trail

Two weeks ago at Newmarket, all eyes were on the unbeaten Native Trail in the bet365 Craven Stakes. 

Architect Tips was certainly impressed, believing he strengthened his case as the one they all have to beat in the 2000 Guineas (11/10) with a dominant performance in the hands of William Buick.
