2025 March Madness Potential Cinderella Teams

1. McNeese State Cowboys

McNeese State is absolutely rolling in the Southland conference, and they are heavily favored to make the NCAA Tournament for a second-straight year. They are -550 to win their conference tournament, thus returning them to the field where they were a popular underdog pick a year ago. Last year was their first March Madness appearance since 2002, but former LSU head coach Will Wade has this program moving in a rapid ascension.

They may have succumbed to a Gonzaga buzzsaw a year ago, but they are even better this year. They are 58th in the NET, 10 spots higher than this time last year. Their top five scorers are all veteran juniors and seniors, critical for tournament experience. They've lost just one conference game all season, rolling to a 19-1 record and only a few games away from punching their ticket. And last but not least, we can't overlook that their team manager has also gone viral, famous for blasting a boombox on the team's walkout like the San Francisco 49ers. That extra mojo can propel a team to several March Madness victories as we've seen time and time again.

2. VCU Rams

Do these guys even count as a Cinderella anymore? The VCU Rams are dominating in the A-10 this season, racking up a 25-5 record. They've won nine straight games, and haven't lost at home all year. Most impressively, they are coming in at 29th in the NET, and have been on the cusp of being ranked several times. Now, they're knocking on the door of the NCAA Tournament, a place they know all too well.

They've been 12 times in the last 20 years, and should be getting in regardless of winning the A-10 Tournament. It's important to note that there could easily be a bid-stealer in this conference, with George Mason, Dayton, St. Joe's and Loyola all riding winning streaks into next week's tournament. If one of them can upset VCU, and there's certainly a possibility, the Rams should still find a way into the field off their strong resume.

Regardless, they are expected to be an 11 seed, and no team wants to play this ferocious bunch. They are holding opponents to the third-lowest field goal percentage in the country, and play the 5th-best 2-point defense. No one is driving the lane against these guys, and they're barely allowing 30% from three at the same time. This squad will swarm against any offensive powerhouse in the first round, and make life miserable for them. They may even be one of the rare favored 11 seeds over the 6. Watch out for the Rams if they aren't on your radar already.

3. Yale Bulldogs

The Yale Bulldogs are on a tear in the Ivy League, and are threatening to repeat their 13th-seeded upset from a year ago. Who could forget the Bulldogs stunning the red-hot Auburn Tigers in the first round last year by two points. John Poulakidas went 6-for-9 from three-point land, dropping 28 total and aiding Yale to their first NCAAT win since 2016. Big man Danny Wolf may be off at Michigan, but Poulakidas and co. are back again for another go. The senior standout is averaging 19 points per game, and is ready to carry Yale to another upset. Yale is 73rd in the NET and projected for a 12 seed if they can finish strong in the Ivy. Their 12-1 conference record tells the story, only having dropped their first game on the road at Harvard last weekend. The Ivy League tournament gets underway next weekend, and we'll know pretty soon if the Bulldogs are game for a run.
