Aljamain Sterling put the doubters to rest at UFC 273 when he defeated Petr Yan via decision after he famously won the UFC's 135-pound title after Yan drilled him with an illegal knee at UFC 259. Sterling defeated Yan in a rematch earlier this year in April by split decision.

Before the pair of showdowns against Yan, Sterling ran through the Bantamweight division and will head into UFC 280 without a defeat in over five years. Sterling's unbeaten run has seen the New York native defeat the likes of Cory Sandhagen, Pedro Munhoz, Jimmie Rivera, Cody Stamman, and Brett Johns.

Sterling has vastly improved his striking game since entering the UFC in 2014 but has always been as slick as they come on the mat, most famously with his rear-naked choke submission victory over the previously unbeaten Cory Sandhagen at UFC 250. The choke earned Sterling his first-ever Performance of The Night bonus in his nine-year UFC career.

Sterling currently has the second-most wins in UFC Bantamweight history, only trailing his opponent for UFC 280, TJ Dillashaw.

KOTC: Legacy

Standing across from Aljamain Sterling at UFC 280 will be former two-time UFC Bantamweight Champion, TJ Dillashaw. The California-native had a mixed bag of results to begin his UFC tenure back in 2011 after he was viciously knocked out by John Dodson in the finale of The Ultimate Fighter 14.

However, since then, Dillashaw has only gone on to become widely regarded as one of the best 135-pounders in MMA history. Dillashaw outclassed longtime champion Renan Barao at UFC 173 to earn his first taste of UFC gold. Dillashaw would defend his title three times following the win over Barao but would lose the title to longtime champion Dominick Cruz via split-decision in 2016. Dillashaw would get right back on track and win four straight, including back-to-back knockout wins over then-champion Cody Garbrandt, the first time to win back the title, the second to put the rivalry with his former teammate to rest. Dillashaw would be knocked out by Henry Cejudo in Dillashaw's bid to go down to flyweight and become a two-weight champion.

However, Dillashaw would voluntarily relinquish the UFC Bantamweight championship after USADA, and the New York State Athletic Commission had 'adverse findings' following his bout with Cejudo. Dillashaw would return in July 2021 and defeated Cory Sandhagen via unanimous decision to earn his shot at reclaiming what was twice his.
