Heisman Trophy Odds: Garrett Nussmeier Surges in Heisman Race Following Upset Over Clemson

Week 1 of college football delivered many shocks and surprises, with Florida State stunning No. 8 Alabama, as well as No. 1 Texas, No. 4 Clemson, and No. 6 Notre Dame going down to their top-10 opponents. There were many Heisman candidates on display during those games, and the odds have shaken up based on the outcomes.

Arch Manning, the previous leader at +700, has tumbled all the way down to +1800, nearly outside the top-10 best candidates. Meanwhile, Garrett Nussmeier of LSU, Carson Beck of Miami, and LaNorris Sellers of South Carolina all climbed in the rankings, now making up the top-3 quarterbacks in the race.

Most teams are taking on cupcakes in Week 2 after the opening festivities, so these star quarterbacks will look to build their profile with blowout victories and massive stat lines. Who stands to gain the most this week? Let's take a look at the Week 1 performances and how the Heisman race leaderboard stacks up as of September 2nd.

Heisman Trophy Odds Breakdown

Garrett Nussmeier (+800) Click here to bet on Garrett Nussmeier at FanDuel

Garrett Nussmeier now leads the pack, though he didn't have to rise very much to do so. He was previously in the third position at +900, but rose above Klubnik and Manning after both suffered opening week defeats. Nussmeier went 28-38 with 230 yards passing and a touchdown. He didn't have to do a whole lot in this defensive battle, but he avoided mistakes and completed the majority of his passes, enabling LSU to control the clock and pick up the road upset in Clemson.

LSU is expected to surge into the top 5 of Tuesday's AP Top 25 Poll, and with the Tigers as a 37.5-point favorite over Louisiana Tech this week, Nussmeier should be able to put up an impressive stat line as he continues to boost his Heisman resume.

LaNorris Sellers (+1000) Click here to bet on LaNorris Sellers at DraftKings

LaNorris Sellers finished strong for South Carolina in Week 1 in a neutral site victory over Virginia Tech. It started off slow with an underwhelming first half, but Sellers helped the Gamecocks blow the game open in the second half of a 24-11 victory at Mercedes Benz Stadium.

The sophomore finished with 200 yards through the air with a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown when it was all said and done, capped off by the 64-yard pass to Nyck Harbor in the fourth quarter. Sellers has risen up to the second spot here after starting off in 5th last week, moving from +1800 odds to +1000, the biggest jump of the week.

Carson Beck (+1100) Click here to bet on Carson Beck at FanDuel

Carson Beck put himself back on the map during Miami's home upset over Notre Dame on Sunday night. The storied rivalry was renewed at Hard Rock Stadium, and Beck was able to do just enough help the Canes hold off a late charge from the Irish. After being cast aside and scapegoated at Georgia, this was a major redemption moment for the veteran transfer.

Beck went for 205 yards and two touchdowns, showing off his connection with speedy freshman Malachi Toney. He will now take on Bethune Cookman in Week 2 and look to pad his stats as Miami will be a colossal favorite.

Gunnar Stockton (+1500) Click here to bet on Gunnar Stockton at DraftKings

Gunnar Stockton has entered the race after leading the Georgia Bulldogs to a blowout win over Marshall. The Dawgs won 45-7 and Stockton accounted for 250 total yards and four touchdowns, with half coming on the ground. He showcased his aggressive running style as he barreled into the end zone repeatedly, and followed up on the flashes he showed towards the end of last season when Beck went down.

Georgia will have another tune-up game against Austin Peay this week, where they could be higher than 40-point favorites. Stockton can light up the scoreboard once again at Sanford Stadium and cement himself as a contender with Georgia becoming leaders in the National Championship race once again.

Arch Manning (+1800) Click here to bet on Arch Manning at FanDuel

The Texas savior didn't quite match up to the billing on Saturday, going 17-30 for 170 yards with a touchdown and an interception in the 14-7 road loss to No. 3 Ohio State. Arch tumbled from his perch as the leader of +700 just a week ago, and now sits back at +1800, almost falling out of the top 10. It was certainly a high-pressure spot to step into in the biggest start of his young career, but the Longhorns just couldn't figure it out at Ohio Stadium, especially in the red zone.

He'll have a chance for redemption this week against San Jose State, where Texas is a 36.5-point favorite. The Longhorns will need to get some reps in if they want to still make the playoff, with tough contests coming up in October against Florida and Oklahoma. They can probably only afford one more loss on the season, and Arch will have to prevent them from falling apart.
