Top 5 Candidates to Replace Dave Gettleman as New York Giants GM
Top 5 Candidates to Replace Dave Gettleman as New York Giants GM
Just when you didn't think it could get any worse for the New York Giants, Week 18 happened. While no team ideally wants to play a game with a third-string quarterback under center, only very sad teams would dare run a QB sneak on third down at their own four-yard line.
Parents, cover your kids' ears before watching:
Big-time "Oof" indeed. Anyone with any amount of respect for the game of football should be cringing in horror at that clip.
At any rate, the Giants concluded the 2021-22 season with a record of 4-13. That abysmal standing was enough to secure the No. 4 overall pick in the upcoming NFL Draft. It was also almost certainly enough to convince ownership to move on from disgruntled GM, Dave Gettleman.
A native of Boston, Gettleman took over as New York's general manager in 2018. While he inherited a team that had gone 3-13 the previous season, Gettleman failed to improve much of anything over the next four years. The Giants finished with win totals of five, four, six and now four again, under his watch.
Many Giants fans and NFL analysts alike have been calling for Gettleman's dismissal for over a year. After an abysmal finish to this most recent season, it is widely expected that the Giants will finally make the move and bring in a new GM in time for the 2022 NFL Draft. The question is not so much IF the change will happen as it is WHO will be chosen to fill the vacancy?
Knowing the track record of this organization, the choice could very well come from out of leftfield. Nonetheless, here are five candidates who figure to garner consideration from John Mara and the Giants' brass.
Top 5 Candidates for Giants GM Position
Louis Riddick
Current ESPN NFL analyst Louis Riddick has previous front office experience and even was among the candidates interviewed prior to Gettleman being hired in 2018. Riddick is a popular name in the Giants GM rumor mills. He has repeatedly criticized the organization's decision-making ever since being passed over in 2018.
Kevin Abrams
If there were going to be NFL betting odds on who will be the next New York Giants general manager, Kevin Abrams would have to be right up there with Riddick as a favorite. Abrams has served as the Giants' assistant GM since 2002 and his time with the organization dates back to 1999. He served as the interim GM in 2017 following Jerry Reese's dismissal and was interviewed for the full-time role prior to Gettleman's hiring.

Joe Judge
Wait, what?! The same coach who called a QB sneak at his own four-yard line might rise up and take over GM duties yet too? After the disgraceful display in Week 18, the likelihood of Joe Judge pulling double-duty is low. However, there has been a widespread belief that he would return for a third season as head coach even if (when) the Giants opted to move on from Gettleman. Owner John Mara gave Judge a vote of confidence as recently as last week. Might the Giants try to turn him into their own version of Bill Belichick, of whom Judge is a coaching disciple?
Scott Pioli
If the Giants opt to pursue candidates with a high degree of experience, Scott Pioli certainly fits the bill. He has been in or around NFL front offices throughout the entire 21st century. Currently the assistant GM in Atlanta, Pioli spent four years as general manager in Kansas City and nine as a personal director in New England. He is a five-time NFL Executive of the Year Award winner and also won Executive of the Decade for the 2000-2010 seasons.
Dave Caldwell
Rounding out this list is the man who served as GM of the Jacksonville Jaguars for seven years from 2013-20. During his time in Duval County, Dave Caldwell worked alongside legendary Giants coach Tom Coughlin. While the end of his tenure was disappointing, people are quick to forget that the Jags nearly made the Super Bowl in 2017. Caldwell is currently working as a personal executive with the Philadelphia Eagles.
