7 minNFL Quarterback Rankings: Ranking the Top 10 Quarterbacks Going Into Week 9
It has been quite the odd NFL season—we've seen more parity (with a couple of exceptions) than in any year in recent memory, many of the expected-to-be-contending teams have fallen off, and the general level of football—on average—has not been the best. Nevertheless, we move forward. Here is my post-Week 8 edition of the top 10 quarterbacks of the season, based exclusively on 2022 play (i.e. 2021 performances are not a factor). Let's take a look at my rankings for the top NFL Quarterbacks through week 8.

NFL Quarterback Rankings
1. Josh Allen - MVP Odds (+125) Bet $100 to collect $225 Click here for the best odds, available at FanDuel
Josh Allen didn't turn in his best performance of the season on Sunday night, but it was still more than enough to secure the victory over the Packers. Allen ranks top 2 on the season in passing yards per game, passing touchdowns, and quarterback rating. The Bills are the near-consensus best team in the NFL—favored to win the Super Bowl by a wide margin—and much of that is because of Allen's stellar play.
2. Patrick Mahomes - MVP Odds (+430) Bet $100 to collect $530 Click here for the best odds, available at FanDuel
The Chiefs are probably the best team in the NFL outside of Buffalo, and Mahomes is the biggest reason for that. Kansas City's franchise QB has had an excellent season—he leads the league with 20 passing touchdowns, and he ranks second in passer rating, QB rating, and passing yards per game. Mahomes has also limited his turnovers—he has thrown just five interceptions and hasn't lost any fumbles. The Chiefs are probably the second-best team in the NFL, and Mahomes is the biggest reason for that. It's not a coincidence that the top two teams have the two best quarterbacks—the NFL is a QB-driven league at its core.

3. Jalen Hurts - MVP Odds (+380)Bet $100 to collect $480 Click here for the best odds, available at FanDuel
Hurts does not have elite passing numbers, but he does have very, very good ones. Indeed, he ranks top 10 in passing yards per game, passer rating, and QB rating. When you then consider the fact that he adds a huge chunk of value as a rusher, it would seem like malpractice to leave him out of the top three. His efficiency has led to results—the Eagles have been the third-best offense in the NFL in terms of points per game (28) and yards per game (395.4). If that level of offensive production continues, Philly seems like a near-lock to secure the top seed in the NFC.
4. Tua Tagovailoa - MVP Odds (+7500) Bet $100 to collect $7,600. Click here for the best odds, available at FanDuel
I have never been Tua's biggest fan, but his play of late leaves me no choice but to rank him highly. He has the top quarterback rating and passer rating in the NFL, and he ranks top 10 in yards per game and passing touchdowns. A lot of that production can be attributed to the hyper-efficient new system and his stellar wideouts, but not all of it. The Dolphins are 5-0 this season in games where Tua started and finished; they are 0-3 in games where he did not. Wins are not a quarterback statistic, to be sure, but there's no doubt that Miami's offense runs better with him at the helm.
5. Lamar Jackson - MVP Odds (+950) Bet $100 to collect $1,050 Click here for the best odds, available at FanDuel
Lamar has been inconsistent at times, but his overall body of work is still befitting of an elite quarterback. He ranks fourth in passing touchdowns with 15, fifth in QB rating, and first in rushing yards per game amongst QBs. His play has led the Ravens to first place in the AFC North, carrying a defense that has been slightly below league average. It's also worth noting that Lamar has been throwing to a barebones receiving core for most of the season. Outside of Mark Andrews, the Ravens don't have much in the way of aerial threats. The fact that Lamar has led the fifth-best scoring offense in the NFL despite having nothing to target at wide receiver is pretty remarkable.
6. Geno Smith - MVP Odds (+3200) Bet $100 to collect $3,300 Click here for the best odds, available at FanDuel
Nothing speaks to the odd nature of the 2022 NFL season quite like Geno Smith's continual appearance near the top of the quarterback rankings. Smith, a career backup, was essentially written off prior to this year. However, he has seemingly revitalized his career, turning in good performance after good performance to lead the Seahawks to a NFC West-leading 5-3. The Seahawks have scored the fourth-most points per game in the NFL; while much of that is because of the run game, Smith has been remarkably efficient, boasting the fourth-highest QB rating in the NFL. If he keeps this up, the Seahawks will be a threat to make the playoffs in a weak NFC.
7. Justin Herbert - MVP Odds (+2500) Bet $100 to collect $2,600 Click here for the best odds, available at FanDuel
The Chargers were on a bye in Week 8, but Herbert has moved up two spots by default. Despite a weak and injured supporting cast, Herbert has been a quality starter this season, recording 12 touchdown passes and just four interceptions. Brighter days are ahead for the Chargers, and that includes Herbert, who should benefit from the eventual return of Mike Williams and Keenan Allen at receiver.
8. Joe Burrow - MVP Odds (+2500) Bet $100 to collect $2,600 Click here for the best odds, available at FanDuel
Burrow had to be bumped down after his virtual no-show on Monday night against the Browns. Over the course of the season, he has been an effective passer, posting 17 touchdowns, six interceptions, and the sixth-highest passer rating in the NFL. However, he only has the 15th-best QB rating, and Bengals have just four wins. Further, it's worth noting that Cincinnati's offense looked abysmal without Ja'Marr Chase, calling into question Burrow's ability to elevate an unspectacular supporting cast. Burrow has the potential to move back up the list with a couple of good outings, but eighth seems fair for now.
9. Jimmy Garoppolo - MVP Odds (+14000) Bet $100 to collect $14,100 Click here for the best odds, available at FanDuel
Garoppolo was clinical in the 49ers' win over the Rams on Sunday, completing 21 of 25 passes for 235 yards and two touchdowns. He has quietly put together a solid campaign in a year where he entered training camp as the backup; he has thrown for 11 touchdowns and four interceptions en route to a 3-3 record as the starter. With Christian McCaffrey expected to be further integrated into the plan and Deebo Samuel on the mend, I expect the 49ers' offense to take off at some point.
10. Daniel Jones - MVP Odds (+10000) Bet $100 to collect $10,100 Click here for the best odds, available at FanDuel
To round out the top 10, we have a quarterback who has led his team to wins with a horrendous supporting cast. The Giants' offensive line has been nothing short of awful, and their options at wide receiver and tight end (Marcus Johnson? Richie James?) are somehow even worse. Still, the Giants are 6-2. Jones has not been spectacular—and he was not good on Sunday against the Seahawks—but he has made plays in key spots that allowed the Giants to snatch victories out of the jaws of defeat. There are a few QBs who could be in this tenth spot, but Jones seems like the most logical choice.
