Ben Johnson leads the way by the narrowest of margins at +500, or an implied 16.7% chance to be the Panthers' next head coach. He’s followed by interim head coach Steve Wilks at +525, or an implied 16% chance. Then Shane Steichen comes at +550, or an implied 15.4% chance.
A little breathing room is created after the top three with Jim Caldwell leading the second group of candidates at +700, or an implied 12.5% chance. Ken Dorsey and Frank Reich are both given +800 odds, or an 11.1% chance to land the job. Then Dan Quinn and Jim Harbaugh are both given +900 odds, or an implied 10% chance.
Perhaps the most surprising name on the market is Bill O’Brien. Alabama’s Offensive Coordinator does not appear on the market for any of the other four teams, but he is given +2500 odds, or an implied 3.8% chance to be the next Panthers head coach. They also offer the best odds for Steelers Linebacker coach Brian Flores who’s given +1400 odds, or an implied 6.7% chance.
The Panthers' head coaching search is a complete wild card. With the other four teams seemingly locked in on their preferred candidates, all previous head coaches, the Panthers are likely to have their pick of first-time head coaches. It could be Lions Offensive Coordinator Ben Johnson, or perhaps Eagles Offensive Coordinator Shane Steichen. Maybe they simply stick with Steve Wilks who finished the year 6-6 as interim Head Coach. Anything is possible in Carolina right now.
