When the Houston Texans began this head coaching search the sportsbooks weren’t sure how to take it. The job didn’t seem all that appealing and as a result, it seemed like they’d be forced to hire someone nobody else wanted. Instead, it now seems like the Texans are favored to land one of the more coveted names on the market.

Philadelphia Eagles Defensive Coordinator Johnathan Gannon is given +150 odds, or an implied 40% chance to become the next Texans head coach. He was given +700 odds, or an implied 12.5% chance on Tuesday.
Gannon’s biggest competition is expected to be San Francisco 49ers Defensive Coordinator DeMeco Ryans and Eagles Offensive Coordinator Shane Steichen. Ryans is given +300 odds, a boost from +600 on Tuesday. Meanwhile, Steichen has gone from +700 to +400.

The former favorites, Kliff Kingsbury and Eric Bieniemy, are both now considered longshots. They were given +450 and +500 odds when the market opened, but both are now given +900 odds, or just a 10% chance.
While the Texans as an organization may not be the most stable or desirable, their situation is. They have the No. 2 pick in the NFL draft, nearly $200 million in cap space slated for 2024, and some good young players after a strong 2022 draft. As a result, they’re having an easier time attracting candidates than the books previously thought. Now they’re expected to land three of the biggest first-time head coach candidates available.
