9 min2023 NFL MVP Race: Josh Allen Jumped Tua Tagovailoa in NFL MVP Odds Heading Into Week 5
After a couple of weeks with Tua Tagovailoa sitting atop the NFL MVP odds race, Josh Allen has supplanted the Miami Dolphins' quarterback following a 48-20 rout in Buffalo. Allen threw for over 300 yards and four touchdowns, playing another turnover-free game while completing 21 of 25 pass attempts, adding a fifth touchdown as a ball carrier.
Allen and Tagovailoa were in the MVP mix down the stretch last season before Patrick Mahomes won his second regular season MVP en route to his second Super Bowl MVP. He's still tied for second at +500 odds on FanDuel Sportsbook, followed by Jalen Hurts, Lamar Jackson, and Justin Herbert.
New players have made their way into the top of the 2023 NFL MVP odds as well after Week 4, including two San Francisco 49ers, led by star running back, Christian McCaffrey. MVP is a quarterback award, but if McCaffery can keep producing multi-touchdown games with over 100 scrimmage yards, he could be the first non-quarterback to win NFL MVP since Adrian Peterson won MVP back in 2012.
Brock Purdy has been surgical with his passing as well, landing him at +2000 NFL MVP odds. Alongside him is Jacksonville quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, who bounced back with a solid outing against a good Atlanta defense during the Jaguars' 23-7 win in London.
NFL handicapper Matt MacKay is back to give us his latest updated NFL MVP Power Rankings heading into the first week of Byes.

NFL MVP Race Into Week 4
Josh Allen (+350) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best Allen NFL MVP odds
Buffalo has shaken off a slow start to its season with MVP-caliber play from franchise quarterback Josh Allen. He has completed over 83 percent of his throws since the Week 1 overtime loss to the New York Jets, while only recording one turnover, after committing four turnovers during the loss. Allen has thrown for three or more touchdowns in two of his past three games, adding back-to-back rushing touchdowns to continue demonstrating his dual-threat ability. Bills fans can let out a deep exhale as their quarterback once again sits atop the NFL MVP odds race. +350 is good value compared to if Allen keeps this up, especially with soft upcoming matchups, so let's hammer Allen's MVP odds at +350 on FanDuel.
Tua Tagovailoa (+500) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best Tua NFL MVP odds
Tua Tagovailoa didn't play horribly but he did throw an interception while getting held to just one passing touchdown and under 300 yards for the second time in the past three games. Miami's offense has explosive playmakers in its backfield, making it a more balanced approach than what we saw last year. Tagovailoa's rapport with Tyreek Hill could keep him near the top of the MVP race, especially with juicy matchups like the Giants and Panthers looming. Wagering his odds at +500 is a good choice, before tougher matchups against the Patriots and Chiefs defenses in Weeks 8 and 9. Taking these odds, or fading, both make sense in this scenario.
Patrick Mahomes (+500) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best Mahomes NFL MVP odds
It took nearly the full 60 minutes, but Patrick Mahomes was able to overcome a mistake-riddled performance to beat the New York Jets in prime time on the road in Week 4. His mobility was a huge asset, using his legs to buy time and convert several third down plays, including the walk-off slide at the goal-line to seal the win. Even with two interceptions and only one touchdown pass, Mahomes' MVP odds remain neutral at +500 from a week ago. The reigning MVP gets an incredibly favorable matchup against Minnesota's pass defense in Week 5, so +500 could be great value compared to a week from now, so let's hammer Mahomes' MVP odds before they are reduced to a less profitable number.
Jalen Hurts (+800) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best Hurts NFL MVP odds
We finally saw Jalen Hurts and A.J. Brown get going in Week 4 against the Commanders, as the two linked up for two touchdowns, with Brown recording 175 receiving yards and nine receptions on 13 targets. It was Hurts' first time finishing with two touchdown passes this season, while he's already accounted for three rushing touchdowns during his first four games played. As long as the Eagles remain undefeated, or at least don't fall into a losing slump, Hurts will be in the mix for MVP, just like he was prior to his injury late last season. +800 is a good number to bet, so let's throw a unit or two on Hurts' MVP odds before a matchup against a bad Rams run defense in Week 5.
Lamar Jackson (+1200) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best Jackson NFL MVP odds
Lamar Jackson looked incredibly efficient as a passer and a ball carrier against one of the league's top defenses in Week 4. The 2019 MVP winner has turned back the clock, recording four rushing touchdowns, scoring two each, in his last two games played. Jackson also connected with Mark Andrews for a pair of touchdown passes to blow out the Browns on the road. An even better matchup awaits Jackson in Week 5 against the Steelers' porous secondary, so at +1200 odds, we need to bet this number now before it shortens after another potent outing from Jackson on the road against the Steelers.
Justin Herbert (+1600) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best Herbert NFL MVP odds
We've seen Justin Herbert lead this Chargers offense downfield and finish drives in multiple ways under new OC Kellen Moore this season. Herbert used his size and mobility to get two rushing touchdowns in Week 4 against the Raiders, which countered his pedestrian day as a passer, resulting in a 54 percent completion rate and only 167 yards, a touchdown, and an interception. This is why Herbert's odds grew longer and more profitable despite two rushing touchdowns and a win over a divisional opponent. Now, he and the Chargers are on Bye, before hosting the Dallas Cowboys in Week 6. Get your Herbert MVP bets in now with lucrative +1600 odds before Herbert winds up with a statement win over one of the league's best defenses.
Brock Purdy (+1600) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best Purdy NFL MVP odds
Despite the perceptions of being a glorified game manager, Brock Purdy has looked even better during his second year in the league. Purdy only recorded one incompletion during the 49ers' 35-16 win over the Cardinals in Week 4, going 20-of-21 for 283 yards and a touchdown pass, while converting a goal-line touchdown as a ball carrier. Purdy has yet to fall below a 65 percent completion rate this season and is surrounded by weapons at every position within San Francisco's offense. If he continues to be this efficient, his odds will shorten. Let's wait and see how Purdy performs against the Cowboys and Browns' defensive units in his next two games before betting on his MVP odds.
Trevor Lawrence (+2000) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best Lawrence NFL MVP odds
After a couple of bad performances, Jacksonville's third-year franchise quarterback, Trevor Lawrence, bounced back against Atlanta in London. Lawrence completed a season-best 76.7 percent of his pass attempts, including a touchdown pass early in the game to top wideout, Calvin Ridley. Lawrence added five carries for 42 yards, while he's attempted at least 30 passes in every game this season. Next up, Lawrence and the Jags get the stout Buffalo defense, so let's wait to see how he performs in that game before wagering his MVP odds, despite sitting at a lucrative +2000 on FanDuel Sportsbook.
Christian McCaffrey (+2500) Click here to see which sportsbook has the best McCaffrey NFL MVP odds
Finally, we've got a player in the top of the MVP odds race that isn't a quarterback! Christian McCaffrey is fresh off of a four-touchdown outing against a good Cardinals defense, recording 177 scrimmage yards during his dominant performance. McCaffrey feasts on carries and targets within Kyle Shanahan's run-centric West Coast offensive scheme. This volume, along with the talent surrounding McCaffery, could make him the first non-quarterback to win NFL MVP in over a decade. +2500 is still huge value for McCaffrey, who rocketed up the leaderboard, so one more game like this could cut these odds in half. If he replicates this production against either the Cowboys or Browns, McCaffrey becomes a legitimate frontrunner. Let's hammer McCaffrey's odds at +2500 while we still can.
