The Philadelphia Eagles found a way to bring home a victory on Monday Night Football in a grudge match with the Kansas City Chiefs, thanks to several clutch plays by Jalen Hurts.
The Super Bowl rematch wasn't a pretty game by any means, riddled with turnovers and dropped passes. The Chiefs led by 10 at the break and outgained the Eagles by nearly 100 yards, but neglected to score for the entire second half.
Jalen Hurts only completed 14 passes for 150 yards and an interception, in what turned out to be a nasty weather game. But he ultimately got the job done with his legs, finding the end zone twice on his 12 rushes.
Hurts may not have the most impressive stats, but he has guided his talented team to the best record in the NFL, and winning games is ultimately what this award comes down to. Let's take a look at the latest odds and the Eagles season outlook to see if he can hold on to the lead.
NFL MVP Odds
Player | Odds | Implied Probability |
|---|---|---|
Jalen Hurts | +250 | 28.57% |
Lamar Jackson | +420 | 19.23% |
Patrick Mahomes | +460 | 17.86% |
Tua Tagovailoa | +500 | 16.67% |
Dak Prescott | +1500 | 6.25% |
Brock Purdy | +1500 | 6.25% |
C.J. Stroud | +1800 | 5.26% |
Josh Allen | +1800 | 5.26% |
Hurts was a slight underdog to Mahomes before this matchup, sitting at +300 odds to Mahomes' +250. He now has sole possession of the lead, and a nearly 30% implied chance to bring home his first MVP award.
While Hurts didn't blow Mahomes out of the water with stats in the Monday Night Football showdown, he helped his team win, and that made all of the difference. He won't see a massive uptick in his price, but Mahomes definitely saw a drop, as the Chiefs lost their third game while passing for only 177 yards on a lowly 55% completion rate.
Hurts is barely holding on to his spot in the top-10 of NFL passing leaders with a touch under 2,500 yards through 10 games. In fact, nearly every contender in the latest odds has thrown for more than him. He is tied for 13th with 15 passing touchdowns, and is also not in the top-10 of passer rating.
His nine rushing touchdowns certainly give him a boost, but a similar player like Lamar Jackson leads him in many other categories. The Ravens QB has more rushing yards, less interceptions, and a better passer rating than the Eagles star. But Hurts has two less losses than Jackson, which is making the difference right now.
If and when those team records start to even out as the season comes to a close, Hurts will need to seriously bolster his stats if he wants to beat out the other contenders.
Eagles Season Outlook
The Philadelphia Eagles couldn't be in a better position through the first 10 games of the season. They have found a way to win the close games, and are holding on to a firm division lead.
Philly is -900 to win the NFC East with a two-game advantage over Dallas, including the head-to-head tiebreaker. They are also leading the odds to win the NFC Championship after last night's victory at +190, slightly higher than the Niners at +220.
However, their next couple games are no walk in the park. The Eagles host the revitalized Buffalo Bills on Sunday, and will follow that up with consecutive games against the Niners, Cowboys, and Seahawks.
All four of those teams are expected to be playoff contenders, and Hurts will have to continue to find ways to win if he is going to hold onto this advantage over Mahomes and Jackson.
Their final three games are against the Cardinals and Giants, so they should get a reprieve before the playoffs. But we will know by then if Hurts has survived the stretch and still has a shot in the MVP race.
