Andrew Abbott has been one of the few reliable starting pitchers for the Reds this season. The Nationals have also struggled against left-handed pitching this season. Abbott should have an edge early-on in this contest against the Nationals right-handed hitters. I don’t see them putting up three early runs again like they did against Lodolo yesterday.
Jake Irvin is coming off a couple poor outings. I’m expecting him to bounce back against a Reds offense that has been silenced for the greater part of this series. His earned runs allowed prop is lower than I expected today after giving up six earned runs in each of his last two outings. After the over hit in the first two games of this series, I want to back these starting pitchers in a pitcher’s duel.
Instead of betting the full game under and risking either bullpen blowing up, let’s isolate the first five innings of this game. Both offenses have showed up times early-on this series, but I’m banking on Andrew Abbott and Jake Irvin to silence the bats on Sunday. Before allowing 12 runs in his last two starts, Jake Irvin was silently one of the best starting pitchers in the National League.
