New York Mets vs. New York Yankees Prediction
The Mets caught fire heading into the all-star break after a rough start to the season. The Mets went 9–19 in the month of May before going 16–8 in June and 12–7 so far in July, completely flipping the script of their season. They have now battled back to 52–48, sitting just a few games behind the Braves in the loaded NL East. The New York Yankees are 60–43, sitting 1.5 games behind the first place Orioles in the AL East. The Yankees have had an opposite trajectory compared to the Mets, as they started the season red-hot and have been faltering as of late. The Yankees went 21–7 in May before going 14–13 in June and 6–11 in July so far. Even during this rough stretch, the Yankees are a team that should be looked out for, especially in their home ballpark. Gerrit Cole gets to start tonight for the Yankees. Gerrit Cole is sitting with a 4.6 ERA in 2024 with just six starts under his belt as he missed the first few months of the season after an injury in spring training. Cole had a very rough start to the season, Sporting a 6.23 ERA in June, which included an outing against the Mets in which he gave up six earned runs in four innings with four home runs. Even after getting knocked around in that start and his rough start to the season, the Yankees are still heavily favored tonight against the Mets as -175 favorites. I think this line is very telling to the fact that we should not overreact to Cole's start to the season and look forward, as he has put together to back-to-back quality starts over his last two outings. His most recent outing was one earned run in six innings against the Rays, and the start before that was also one earned run in six innings against the Orioles. The key for Gerrit Cole getting back on track was getting his fastball velocity back up. Garrett Cole is a heavy four-seam fastball pitcher, as he throws it nearly 50% of the time. His first starts back from injury, his fastball velocity was way down and hitters were teeing off on it. However, his velocity is starting to increase once again as he gets back to 100% and this is what we have seen over his last few starts. Last season, opposing hitters were hitting .201 against Cole's fastball, and this year it is .268. However, he has an expected .226 batting average on the four-seamer this year, implying some bad luck. The Yankees have lost all three games they have played against the Mets this season, and Gerrit Cole pitched in one of them. I think Gerrit Cole will have a rebound start against the Mets tonight and the Yankees will be leading after five innings after getting a few runs off Sean Manaea.
