The Tigers cooled off a little bit recently as they have gone 9–11 over their last 20 games to drop their record to 60–64, as it is now looking more unlikely that they will make the postseason.
Meanwhile, the Yankees have surged in the standings and have taken over sole possession of first place in the AL East with a record of 73–51 after going 13–7 over the last 20 games. They now have the second-best record in all of baseball behind the Phillies.
Kerry Carpenter will be up against Marcus Stroman of the Yankees tonight. Stroman has given up 18 home runs in 121 innings this season. Carpenter only has one at-bat in his career against Marcus Stroman, but this matchup should favor him, as Carpenter has done very well against right-handed pitching this year, and Stroman has been worse against left-handed hitters.
