UC Santa Barbara vs. Fresno State Prediction
Both the UC Santa Barbara Gauchos and Fresno State Bulldogs are a combined 7-0 to the over this season. This is surprising, especially for the Bulldogs who pride themselves on their defense. Fresno State has some new pieces in the rotation that Coach Hutson is still trying to figure out how to utilize. Luckily for Fresno State, they will be playing this game at home tonight.
Although these two teams have yet to cash an under, this matchup is made in Heaven for one tonight. The reason we’ve seen so many overs up to this point is because of their opponent, not them. They’ve either played against a school like Le Moyne, dropping 96 points on a team below their weight class, or they’ve gotten crushed by a mid-major powerhouse like JMU. Tonight’s matchup will be much lower scoring, as both of these teams match up extremely well.
The Save Mart Center in Fresno has been known for producing unders over the years. To be fair, that is the brand of basketball Coach Hutson has established in Fresno. With the total on the move down from 144 to 141, it looks like we could be in for another under tonight.
When these two squads faced off last year, Ajay Mitchell had one of his worst shooting performances of his career (3/14 from the field, 0/6 from three). That game was at UCBS. Tonight, the star point guard for the Gauchos will have to conquer his fears and step into one of the most formidable arenas in the country. I’m willing to bet Isaiah Hill, Xavier DuSell (Wyoming transfer), and Donovan Yap Jr. strap up Mitchell once again.
If Ajay Mitchell is ineffective in this contest, the Gauchos won’t be able to score. Even with new additions like Yohan Traore (Auburn transfer), Fresno State still have plenty of big bodies like Eduardo Andre to protect the paint. This game is going to feel like your typical Fresno State home basketball game; it’s going to be ugly and low scoring, just how Fresno wants it to be. Fade both of these offenses who are perfect to the over this season, and bet the under in this late night West Coast matchup.
