Houston vs. Duke Prediction: Can Cougars Slow Down Cooper Flagg, Blue Devils in First Half of Final Four?

Duke and Houston will meet in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight season tonight in the second national semifinal matchup at the Alamodome in San Antonio.

You’ve heard enough at this point about how historically great these No. 1 seeds and this Final Four are. And Duke, so far in this tournament, has absolutely looked like the best of the bunch. There truly are no knocks on this team. Led by an unselfish superstar in Cooper Flagg, it’s a perfect mix of one-and-done lottery talent and veteran role players. They boast NBA-level size and three-point shooting, paired with intentional offense and intense defense.

Houston, meanwhile, played in a much tougher league in the Big 12. Of the four games they lost this season, three were in overtime, and three came against teams that reached the Elite Eight or further (including Auburn). The Cougars boast the top defense in the country, built on aggressive trapping and hedging of ball screens, plus length, physicality, and athleticism — all tied together with incredibly high effort and connectivity.

To score against this suffocating defense, it’s crucial to take care of the ball and make Houston pay for bringing two to the ball — by finding the open man for catch-and-shoot threes and attacking closeouts. The Cougars have already faced a gauntlet of elite point guards and head coaches on their way to the Final Four, yet this is still their toughest test yet.

Houston vs. Duke Prediction

On paper, Duke is built in an ideal way to attack this Houston defense. Flagg is an incredible scorer and facilitator out of the short roll. The Blue Devils have three-point shooting everywhere, plus positional size that should help them see over the top of smaller Houston guards like LJ Cryer and Emmanuel Sharp to make good passes. If Duke takes care of the ball, they should be able to generate plenty of open catch-and-shoot looks from deep — something they’ve done at an elite level all year.

All that said, even if Duke presents as tough a matchup as Houston has seen, it’s still a serious challenge to execute against this defense. The Blue Devils still have to make the right reads possession in and possession out, deal with Houston’s length and athleticism, and consistently knock down shots in a giant stadium. Duke hasn’t faced a defense this good in a long time, and their last loss — at Clemson — came at the hands of a physical, veteran, defensive-minded, slow-paced team not unlike Houston.

Duke is coming off an incredible defensive performance, holding Alabama’s explosive offense to just 65 points. Their size and ability to switch 1 through 4 (or 1 through 5 when Maliq Brown is in) will make it difficult for Houston to generate open shots. However, that’s never really been Houston’s game. Their offense isn’t the sexiest, but they take care of the basketball (19th nationally in turnover percentage) and shoot lights out from deep (39.7%) — not because they generate amazing looks, but because Uzan, Cryer, and Sharp are snipers. J’Wan Roberts is also a very efficient isolation scorer in the paint, which could become a pressure point if Duke switches guards onto him. And as always, Houston does damage on the offensive glass (11th in offensive rebounding rate), where second-chance points often become their best offense.

It’s hard to go against Duke right now, but I really think Houston has what it takes to make this a grinder and keep it close. It’s a no-play for me on the side, but if I had to pick, I’m taking the 5.5 with the Cougars. My favorite play in this game is the first half under — this game will be played at a slow tempo, and I could see it taking Duke time to settle in against this defense and the moment.
