The biggest misconception surrounding this matchup is that Pereira is simply moving up in weight and hoping his power translates. The reality is that Pereira may actually benefit from competing without a brutal weight cut for the first time in years.
Reports throughout fight week suggest Pereira is entering this fight north of 250 pounds, putting him right in line with the size of Gane. That eliminates one of the biggest concerns many bettors had when this matchup was first announced. On the feet, I give Pereira the edge.
Gane is a clean and technical striker, but Pereira is one of the most accomplished kickboxers to ever enter mixed martial arts. His legendary left hook gets most of the attention, but his calf kicks may be the most important weapon in this fight. We have seen Pereira systematically break down opponents over the course of five rounds by attacking their lead leg, slowing movement, and forcing exchanges on his terms.
That becomes especially important against a mobile striker like Gane. While Gane is an excellent athlete for a heavyweight, Pereira’s ability to damage opponents from range could gradually eliminate that movement advantage. If Gane becomes stationary, Pereira’s power becomes a major problem. Another factor working in Pereira’s favor is the grappling dynamic.

Gane is undoubtedly dangerous, but he has now come up short multiple times when competing for undisputed UFC gold. Pereira, meanwhile, has consistently found ways to perform when the stakes are highest.

I expect a technical and cautious fight early, but as the rounds progress, Pereira’s pressure, leg kicks, and championship composure should begin to take over.
