San Francisco 49ers vs. Seattle Seahawks Prediction
We're going to see wet, windy conditions in Santa Clara when the 49ers and Seahawks square off for their third matchup of the 2022 season on Saturday afternoon. It's been pouring heavily in California lately and it won't be any different when Brock Purdy and Geno Smith make their playoff debut. The chance of precipitation is sitting between 85 and 97 percent for the duration of the game, along with 10 mph wind gusts, creating additional challenges for both offenses to operate successfully.
San Francisco is laying 9.5 points at home against Seattle, who snuck in as the final seventh seed in the NFC thanks to an untimely throw from Baker Mayfield, intercepted by veteran safety Quandre Diggs in overtime during a Week 18 win over Los Angeles. Tariq Woolen is another talented rookie cornerback who could give fits to Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel on the perimeter, but Purdy's favorite targets, Christian McCaffery and George Kittle will have top-three matchups against Seattle's defense. Smith has regressed in his last four games, throwing only one touchdown in three of these matchups, while logging a pair of interceptions against the Rams' pedestrian secondary in Week 18. He also hasn't thrown for 250 yards during this stretch, which is what he'll need to accomplish if the Seahawks want any legitimate chance of hanging around and covering the 9.5 points they are getting against the league's top-scoring defense and second-best run defense. Rookie running back Kenneth Walker III didn't manage much in either game against the 49ers' defense previously, so D.K. Seattle beats up in nearly all areas of its roster in regards to injuries and 9.5 points seems generous considering the opponent that they're up against to begin the Wild Card Weekend. I like San Francisco to lean into its running game in sloppy conditions to utilize their star running back in a plus-matchup, keeping Seattle off the field and playing catch-up, while the defense will be pressuring Smith into bad decisions all afternoon. I'm hammering San Francisco and the points to win by 10 points or more at home despite playing with their third-string quarterback.
