This is the first time since 2017 the two No. 1 seeds will meet in the Super Bowl. One of the most exciting matchups will be between Travis Kelce, the star tight end for the Kansas City Chiefs, and the Philadelphia Eagles defense.
First and foremost, it's important to note that Travis Kelce has a strong track record of performing well in playoff games. In seven straight playoff games leading up to the AFC Championship, Kelce has passed 79.5 receiving yards, surpassing 90-plus yards in all seven of them. This line is right around Kelce's regular-season average of 78.7 yards per game, which makes sense, but it's not around his playoff average. In the last three seasons in the playoffs, Kelce has averaged 88 yards per game, 99.7 yards per game, and 120 yards per game, showing that he steps up his game in high-pressure situations.
Kelce has become the most clutch pass catcher for the Chiefs, and this is why he has such big games in the playoffs. In Super Bowl 55 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' fourth-ranked passing defense, Kelce had a 10-catch game for 133 yards, showing that he makes the big plays when it matters most. Kelce and Mahomes have unmatched chemistry that is hard to replicate at the highest level. With the Eagles' strong pass rush, quarterback Patrick Mahomes will likely look to dump the ball off to Kelce and the running backs more often than usual. This could result in Kelce blocking more on the line, opening up quick passes over the middle once he breaks off the block.
The Eagles have two shutdown corners in James Bradberry and Darius Slay, who can both shut down the options out wide for the Chiefs. This will force more looks over the middle to Kelce and Juju Smith-Schuster, which could result in increased opportunities for Kelce to make plays. The Eagles' secondary was rated -120% below the NFL average by DVOA in deep passes in the middle of the field, where Kelce is most dangerous. With his ability to stretch the field and make big plays, Kelce is poised to have a strong performance in Super Bowl 57.
Listen, betting on Kelce is not a head-scratcher at this point. Kelce is one of the most bet props today, but just because it is square doesn't mean it's a bad play. Could he have a fluke injury? Sure. But if he stays healthy, I don't see anyone on the Eagles' defense shutting Kelce down for 60 minutes (or potentially more). Kelce thrives in the playoffs, where his receiving average is 15 yards higher than his regular-season career yards per game. It's not a sharp pick, but I think it's a winning pick.
