Japan vs Tunisia Prediction
I believe Japan is the right side, and I’m willing to lay the goal.
The difference between these two teams in their opening matches was impossible to ignore.
Japan faced one of the tournament’s stronger sides in the Netherlands and came away with a hard-earned 2-2 draw. More impressive than the result itself was how they achieved it. Japan remained organized defensively, limited the Dutch attack to just 0.78 expected goals, and once again showcased the tactical discipline that has become their trademark on the international stage. This is a team that rarely beats itself. Tunisia cannot say the same.
The Eagles of Carthage were thoroughly outclassed in a 5-1 loss to Sweden. Defensive breakdowns were everywhere, individual mistakes repeatedly gifted opportunities, and the back line looked completely disconnected for long stretches. Tunisia generated just 0.28 expected goals and managed only six total shots, offering very little threat going forward despite conceding five times.
To make matters worse, the coaching staff has already been forced into changes following the defeat. While Hervé Renard brings valuable experience, expecting him to completely solve Tunisia’s defensive issues in a matter of days is asking a lot. The historical matchup also favors Japan in a major way.
Japan has won five of the six all-time meetings between these nations. Even more telling, the losing side has failed to score in all six meetings. Japan’s structure and defensive organization have consistently frustrated Tunisia, and there is little reason to believe that changes here.
Japan’s attacking quality should also find success against a defense that looked completely overwhelmed in its opener. The Japanese attack averaged three goals per game during qualification and has scored at least two goals in five of its last eight matches. With Tunisia coming off a humiliating defeat and Japan knowing that three points would likely secure passage to the knockout rounds, I expect a focused and professional performance from the Samurai Blue.

Japan is the better team, the more organized team, and the team entering this match with confidence and momentum. If they replicate the defensive intensity they showed against the Netherlands, they should control this match from start to finish.
