3 Minute ReadExpect Low Scoring Matchup As Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde Meet
Saudi Arabia and Cape Verde meet in a pivotal Group Stage finale where the pressure is firmly on the Saudis. While Saudi Arabia needs all three points to keep its knockout hopes alive, I believe this matchup is much more likely to be decided by disciplined defending than an offensive shootout.
That’s why I’m backing the under.
Cape Verde has been one of the biggest surprises of the tournament. Through two matches, they remain unbeaten after holding Spain scoreless and battling Uruguay to an impressive draw. Their defensive organization has been outstanding, anchored by veteran goalkeeper Vozinha, who has been one of the tournament’s best performers. The 40-year-old has already prevented over a goal above expectation while making several key saves to keep Cape Verde in every match.
More importantly, this team simply doesn’t give opponents easy chances.
Cape Verde has not conceded a second-half goal in its last five matches, consistently staying compact and forcing teams into low-quality opportunities. Their willingness to defend deep and frustrate opponents has become their identity.
Saudi Arabia has had the opposite experience.
Despite desperately needing a victory, the Green Falcons have struggled to generate meaningful attacking opportunities throughout the tournament. They are averaging just 0.39 expected goals per match while allowing over two expected goals defensively. Even in their draw against Uruguay, they created very little after halftime and looked short on ideas in the final third.

That lack of attacking quality is difficult to overlook.
Saudi Arabia will almost certainly push numbers forward with elimination on the line, but that doesn’t automatically translate into goals. More often than not, it leads to forced attacks, rushed decisions, and a slower game against a disciplined opponent that’s comfortable defending in numbers.
Cape Verde has every reason to stick with the formula that has gotten them this far. A draw may very well be enough to send them through, so there is little incentive to open the game up unnecessarily.
With one side lacking creativity in attack and the other built around defensive structure, this projects as a tactical battle where chances are limited and every opportunity carries extra importance.
I expect a patient, physical match that stays under the number.
