There will be a brand new winner of the World Grand Prix. Who will reach the final?
John Henderson v Daryl Gurney
‘The Highlander’ has enjoyed a fairytale run, knocking out two World Champions and finds himself in his first ever PDC major semi-final. However it could come to a swift end against Northern Irishman Gurney who will have the support of most of the crowd in Dublin. ‘Superchin’ survived a last-leg shootout against Robert Thornton in the last round and is the better player on paper. But all the pressure will be on Gurney while Henderson is just happy to still be taking the stage. The form that the Scotsman has showed over the last six days gives every indication that he can win this and I certainly wouldn’t say no to backing Henderson at the +1.5 handicap. But 4/5 is a huge price for the +2.5 handicap and provides a lovely cushion.
Simon Whitlock v Mensur Suljovic
There’s not enough that can be said about the improvement in Mensur Suljovic's game over the last two years, to the point that a place in next year’s Premier League must be his if he wants it. Winning on TV in the Champions League of Darts has given The Austrian such a confidence boost and his ability to hit showpiece shots has been second to none in this tournament; the 140 checkout with tops-tops in the last round was one of the outs of the year. This is probably Suljovic’s biggest test this week because he is a big favourite and is facing someone in Simon Whitlock that has been there and done it at this stage before. However I backed Suljovic to reach the final at 10/1 before the tournament and I’m not deserting him now. Back him at the -1.5 Handicap, and based on his finishing this week, back him to hit a checkout over 120.5. They’ll be enough chances for him in a best of 7 format.
