Werder Bremen v Augsburg - Sunday 14:30, BT Sport 2
Bremen began the new Bundesliga season in humiliating fashion, losing 6-0 to reigning champions Bayern. Dirk Schuster’s first game in charge didn’t exactly go to plan either as his Augsburg side were comfortably beaten 2-0 by Wolfsburg. Both sides will be looking for a victory to kick-start their campaigns and they were closely matched last season, with Augsburg 12th and Bremen 13th.
Both sides struggled to 38 points last term and were only two clear of the relegation zone in what was a very tightly packed bottom half of the table. Both, and in particular Bremen, were poor defensively, as they shipped 65 goals. Indeed, in the last four seasons Bremen have kept just 22 clean sheets (16%) and conceded an average of 66 goals a season (1.94 goals per game).
One would think then that a side with such an appalling defence would struggle to stay in the league and the only real reason why Bremen do is that they are solid offensively. In three of the last four seasons they have scored 50 goals. However, this season looks set to be more of a struggle, particularly at this early stage as their three leading scorers from last term are not available for this one, with Pizzaro injured, Ujah leaving the club and Bartels serving a suspension, while big money summer signing Max Kruse is sidelined for the next few months.
In the last four seasons, both teams have found the net in 89 of Bremen’s 136 games and with a defence as poor as theirs this isn’t surprising. As a result, we’re going to take a chance on there being Over 3.5 Goalsin this one, particularly as Augsburg have lost influential centre back Ragnar Klavan to Liverpool and they kept only two clean sheets in the 12 games he missed since 2012/13.
