Germany v England – Wednesday 19:45, ITV1

After coming into the job in less-than-ideal circumstances, Gareth Southgate has been determined to hold his own as England manager, and the national team remains unbeaten since he took the reins. He will, however, be haunted by the memory of England throwing away a two-goal lead over Spain with three minutes to play in November’s round of friendlies. They travel to Germany this week, almost exactly a year since they beat Germany 3-2 at the Olympiastadion, but with no major contests on the immediate horizon they are unlikely to be as motivated for this one.

One area of hope for England is that Germany haven’t been great at home in friendly matches recently – they’ve gone W3-D1-L4 over their last eight, scoring more than twice on only one occasion – so it’s unlikely that they’ll be as prolific as they have been in World Cup qualifiers, where they’ve scored 16 unanswered goals across four games so far. England won’t find it any easier to score in the absence of the injured Harry Kane and Gareth Southgate’s squad doesn’t look strong enough to repeat last year’s result.

England look like they’ll lack the firepower to make inroads against Germany, who’ve won each of their last three at home by at least two goals to nil. We’ll back the hosts to cover the -1 Handicap.
