Goals could be at a premium, with 11 of Villarreal’s last 13 home games producing under three strikes.
Villarreal v Real Sociedad - Sunday 17:30, Sky Sports 3
Given the disruption of a late managerial change just before the start of the season and a host of injuries, Villarreal have made an impressive unbeaten start to the season including a win at Malaga last weekend. Their games haven’t exactly been the most exciting though, with all three seeing fewer than three goals so far.
A 1-1 draw in a drab affair at home to Espanyol means that Real Sociedad’s only success this term has come on the road, at the expense of Osasuna. They picked up impressive wins at Sevilla and Bilbao last term but overall were W6-D4-L9 on their travels. Their last win against the Yellow Submarine came back in 2010/11 and they’ve since lost five of their nine meetings.
Villarreal were involved in the Europa League on Thursday night but Fran Escriba made eight changes so the starting line-up for this clash should be relatively fresh. Goals could be at a premium here with 11 of Villarreal’s last 13 home matches seeing fewer than three strikes, as well as eight of Sociedad’s last 11 visits to top-half teams excluding Barca and Real. With this in mind we’re going to back Villarreal to win and under 2.5 goals as the hosts have won 19 of their last 26 matches against sides outside the top eight at El Madrigal.
