Newport v Barnet - Tuesday 19:45
Graham Westley criticised his younger players for their defensive naivety after Newport crashed to a 3-1 home defeat against leaders Plymouth on Saturday. The Exiles gave a decent account of themselves for 36 minutes but the game hinged on a red card for keeper Joe Day, when he hauled down Jordan Slew for the first of two Argyle penalties.
Now Westley must hope his words have the desired effect because the average age of his team is only set to drop further. Already deprived of four experienced regulars, he now has Day suspended for this rearranged clash, while doubts surround defender Darren Jones and striker Jon Parkin, both of whom picked up knocks at the weekend.
Barnet were 1-0 up when the original game, on September 3, was abandoned at half time due to a waterlogged pitch and they might be cursing their luck even more, now the Welsh club have bottomed-out with Warren Feeney and given themselves a fresh impetus with a new manager. And the major difference might be in how that opening 45 minutes plays out this time around.
Westley prides himself on going after the opposition from the first whistle in home matches, so the Bees might have a storm to weather initially. But a run of one win in 26 matches for the EXiles tells it own story. Take the 15/1 about the Newport/Draw half time/full time outcome. Barnet have only won three matches this season but they’ve won seven second halves.
