New York City v LA Galaxy – Saturday 8:30pm, Sky Sports 5
No two sides in the MLS have invested more heavily in former stars of European football than these two, with the likes of Lampard, Pirlo and David Villa playing for New York City and Gerrard, Ashley Cole and Nigel De Jong donning the La Galaxy shirt.
After an appalling start to the season where NYC won just one of their first nine home games, they’ve since won three on the trot while netting 10 times. They will however find it tougher against Galaxy who have the best defensive record in the league on the road.
Galaxy have been very consistent all season, losing just three matches as Nigel de Jong’s intimidating presence in midfield has made them a tough cookie to crack. However, they’ve drawn 11 of their 23 games, including their last three as they’ve hit a bump in the road in their quest to the summit of the Eastern Conference.
Galaxy’s robust defence will certainly be tested against the attacking flare of NYC, who are the top scorers in the league, and with two star-studded line-ups it’s a close one to call. Frank Lampard could well prove to be the defining factor in this tight encounter. After injury plagued the start of his City career he’s since netted nine times in his last 10 appearance, including a hat-trick in their last game at Yankee Stadium, and he’s 11/5 to score anytime .
