Washington Wizards @ Miami Heat - Thursday, 01.10

There isn’t much left to decide ahead of the final round of regular season NBA games but Miami Heat still have something to play for ahead of the visit of Washington Wizards as they bid to secure a place in the playoffs.

Looking at the Heat roster - aside from Goran Dragic and Hassan Whiteside, who leads the NBA in rebounding - they should be nowhere near postseason contention but somehow we’ve reached the final game and they’re in with a chance, albeit a fairly slim one.

Miami need to beat the Washington tonight and hope either Chicago or Indiana slip up to finish in the top eight of the Eastern Conference, and it would be a surprise to see either the Bulls or Pacers fall short.

The Wizards are already locked in fourth spot and will take on Atlanta Hawks in the first round.  Despite the fact their place is secured Washington won’t necessarily roll over, but they will almost certainly still limit the minutes of some of their key men with one eye on the Hawks.

The Heat grabbed a vital win over Cleveland Cavaliers last time out but they made hard work of it.  The Cavs all but conceded before the match in resting LeBron James and Kyrie Irving (the official line was minor injuries) but Miami still needed overtime to come out on top. However, the Heat have a great record against the Wizards winning all three meetings between the two this season, including a 106-103 success in Washington earlier this week.

In all likelihood the Heat will probably miss out on the playoffs as the Bulls and Pacers should win their respective home games over Brooklyn Nets and the Hawks, but Miami can at least put pressure on the two sides above them by putting Washington to the sword later. The point spread is set at -7 for the Heat and as they’ve beaten the Wizards by at least 11 points in the previous two games between the two at the American Airlines Arena they can pass that mark again tonight.
