The Quarterback position has given the 49ers a lot to think about this season. Trey Lance made just one start and lost to a 3-win Bears team. Jimmy Garoppolo has been his usual steady self but has again dealt with injuries. Now Brock Purdy has burst onto the scene and beat the Dolphins and the Bucs. What does all this mean for the future? Well, sportsbooks don’t expect there to be a real challenge to Trey Lance’s job with the 49ers next NFL season.
49ers Starting QB Odds for 2023
Trey Lance is given -120 odds, or an implied 54.5% chance to be the 49ers starter in 2023. If anyone is going to challenge him, it’s expected to be Brock Purdy, who’s given +260 odds or an implied 27.8% chance to win the job. The books are also not counting out Jimmy G, who’s given +290 odds or an implied 25.6% chance to sign an extension and take the starting job back.
There’s also an outside chance that the 49ers Week 1 starter isn’t even on the roster right now. The books are offering +700 odds, or an implied 12.5% chance that the 49ers bring in a new QB to start in 2023. One of those options is Tom Brady. If Brady doesn’t retire at the end of the season, the 49ers are given +300 odds or an implied 25% chance to sign him. That’s second on the market to only the Buccaneers.
While Lance is the clear favorite here, all options appear on the table. One move that the 49ers aren’t expected to make, though, is to trade for Aaron Rodgers. The books are offering odds on Rodgers next team, and there are currently 9 teams on his market. The 49ers aren’t one of them. Based on what we know from the books, there are four choices here. Stick with Lance, default to Purdy, bring back Jimmy G, or hope Brady has one more ride in him.
