New York Yankees vs. Houston Astros Prediction: Can the Bats Get to Carlos Rodon, Cristian Javier?

After an eventful Opening Day game between two of baseball’s best, we are blessed with “round two” of this heavyweight battle between the Yankees and Astros on Friday night. The Yankees were able to steal the first game on the road in a 5-4 thriller yesterday. Are we in for more exciting baseball in tonight’s rematch?

New York Yankees vs. Houston Astros Prediction

Carlos Rodon will be taking the mound for the Yankees tonight. He struggled mightily in his first season with New York last year, putting up a 6.85 ERA in 14 starts. Until we see Rodon return to prior form, I am going to continue fading him this season. He’s going to have his hands full tonight against an Astros lineup looking to get some revenge for yesterday’s blown opportunity.

The problem with Rodon is that he relies so heavily on his fastball, that if he makes a mistake or his velocity is down he doesn’t have that secondary pitch to get him out of a jam. His strikeout numbers were down last year, and it just hasn’t seemed like Rodon’s arm has the same pop that he did in Chicago. A veteran pitcher entering his 10th season who relies heavily on high fastballs doesn’t sound like a recipe for success to me…

Houston will be throwing Christian Javier tonight. He’s not coming off the best season of his career either. I do think Javier bounces back this season, but not against this potent Yankees lineup tonight. It’s going to take him a few weeks to settle in. Tonight, the Yankees should feast on Javier as he continues his climb back into peak form. Juan Soto has a great matchup against Javier tonight, don’t be surprised if he hits one in the outfield seats in a park he’s very familiar with.

I wasn’t expecting the total to be set this high in this matchup, but it’s probably for a reason. The total has also crept up to 9.5 on some books, a great sign for over bettors. All it’s going to take for the over to hit is one of these two sketchy starters to blow up tonight. That is more than feasible with Rodon and Javier on the mound. Back these potent lineups to continue putting up runs in game two of this potential future ALCS matchup.

Do I even need to mention that this game will be on Apple TV tonight? Since these games began a few years back, we’ve seen higher totals in these games than you’d typically expect. Maybe it’s the baseballs, or it could just be a coincidence, but these Friday night Apple TV games tend to go over the total. Back the Yankees and Astros to continue the trend tonight; this game should soar over by the seventh inning stretch.
