Cleveland Cavaliers vs Brooklyn Nets Picks and Prediction: Nets Deep in Tank Mode as Short-Handed Cavs Come to Brooklyn

The Cleveland Cavaliers (37-24) close out a three-game road trip at Barclays Center against the Brooklyn Nets (15-44) on Sunday, March 1, tipping off at 3:30 PM ET, with Donovan Mitchell confirmed out (groin) and James Harden listed as questionable (fractured thumb), putting a significantly undermanned Cleveland squad on the road against a Brooklyn team that has dropped seven straight and is broadcasting loud and clear that winning is not the priority right now. The Cavs, sitting fourth in the East and nursing a two-game skid of their own, arrive as 11 to 11.5-point favorites in a matchup where the spread number might actually be the least interesting story on the board.

Cleveland Cavaliers vs Brooklyn Nets Picks and Prediction: Nets Deep in Tank Mode as Short-Handed Cavs Come to Brooklyn

Cavaliers vs. Nets Recent Performance

Cleveland is 37-24 and firmly in the Eastern Conference playoff picture, but the last week has been rough for all the wrong reasons. Two wins in their last five, and both losses came without Mitchell and Harden in the lineup. The Knicks win last Tuesday was one of their best performances of the season. Everything since has been damage control on the injury front. The Cavs went 7-3 in their last ten before the injury wave hit, averaging 229.6 combined points per game over that stretch, a number that already clears this game's 222.5 total with room to spare. The starting five without their star backcourt still features Evan Mobley at 17.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per night, Jarrett Allen at 15.3 and 8.6, and enough length to suffocate a Brooklyn offense that ranks dead last in offensive rating league-wide.

Brooklyn has lost seven straight and is sitting at 15-44. The Nets are not trying to win basketball games in March. They are developing young players, protecting their draft positioning, and letting Nolan Traore and Noah Clowney figure out how NBA rotations work. The numbers back this up: 30th in offensive rating (107.2 per 100 possessions), 27th in defensive rating (116.2). Michael Porter Jr. gives them a real offensive option at 24.4 points per game, and Nic Claxton is a legitimate presence in the paint when healthy. Past those two, this roster is a collection of players who belong in the G League or are actively auditioning for one. They covered just twice in their last ten games and have not covered the spread in seven straight.

Cavaliers vs. Nets Head to Head

The teams met last Friday, and the Cavaliers won 112-84. That was a 28-point blowout on the road, and the Nets were not competitive past the first quarter. The Cavs are ahead in the season series and have generally handled Brooklyn with ease when both teams have shown up healthy. The Nets are 5-10-2 ATS as underdogs of 11 points or more this season, so there is some precedent for them hanging around against big spreads, but the tank team discount applies hard here. Historical underdog ATS trends come from competitive teams getting bad matchups, not organizations that have decided to lose.

Cavaliers vs. Nets Team News

Mitchell is confirmed out with a groin strain and will not make the trip. Harden is listed as questionable with a fractured right thumb after breaking it in the Knicks win last Tuesday. He sat out Friday's Detroit game and has been struggling to dribble according to head coach Kenny Atkinson, so do not bank on him suiting up. Dean Wade (ankle) and Max Strus (foot) are also out. Keon Ellis is questionable with a broken left index finger. The expected starting five looks like Dennis Schroder running the point, Sam Merrill and Jaylon Tyson on the wings, with Mobley and Allen holding down the frontcourt.

That is still a legitimately good interior duo against a Nets team that gave up 84 points in a 28-point loss to these same Cavaliers six days ago. Mobley's 1.2-point prop line discount (set at 16.5 against his 17.7 season average) jumps off the page for a reason: books are pricing him as a secondary option with Mitchell in. With Mitchell out, Mobley is the primary offensive engine and faces a Brooklyn defense that allows opponents to shoot 49.6% from the field.

Nic Claxton is questionable for Brooklyn with a thumb injury of his own. If Claxton sits, the Nets lose their most effective interior defender, which makes Mobley's and Allen's nights even more straightforward. Porter Jr. is their only real scoring threat, and Cleveland has the personnel to make his night difficult. Schroder at 12.2 points and 5.2 assists per game gives the Cavs a reliable floor general, and Tyson at 13.5 points per night adds secondary scoring off the wing.

Prediction: Cavaliers 116, Nets 103

Cleveland wins this one comfortably, even without their two best players. Mobley takes over as the primary scorer, gets his 20-plus, and Allen cleans up the glass at both ends while the Nets struggle to find answers in the paint. Porter Jr. gets his 25 or so, and Traore looks good in stretches, but Brooklyn does not have enough around those two to keep pace for four quarters. The Cavs build a lead by halftime and manage the game from there, resting key rotation players in the fourth as the margin holds.

Best Bet: Cavaliers -11 (-140) Click here to get the best odds at bet365 Sportsbook

Brooklyn is 15-44, on a seven-game losing streak, and actively prioritizing draft position over competitive basketball. The Nets held these exact Cavaliers to 112 points last Friday, and still got blown out by 28. Without Mitchell, the Cavs' ceiling is lower, but their floor against a bottom-three offense and defense is still high enough to cover double digits. Cleveland's starting frontcourt of Mobley and Allen is a legitimate top-ten interior pairing in the NBA, and they get to spend 40 minutes against a Brooklyn team that ranks 30th in offensive rating. The 3-9 ATS mark Cleveland carries when favored by 11-plus is a real stat, but that sample includes games against actual NBA-caliber opponents. The Nets in March are not that. Take the Cavaliers -11 before tip, and watch for Harden's status update closer to gametime, as any return from him only strengthens the case.
