5 minUNC Greensboro vs. Furman Prediction: Can Marcus Foster, Paladins Stay Hot Against Spartans?
You could make an argument that this is the deepest Southern conference we’ve seen in years. Typically, we see Chattanooga and Furman battling it out for a bid to the NCAA tournament, but this year things look a little different. It’s actually Samford and UNCG in first and second in conference, with Chattanooga and Furman following suit. Will these two “newcomers” hold their ground at the top of the standings, or will we see a team who typically runs this conference (like Chattanooga or Furman) step up at the end of conference play?

UNC Greensboro vs. Furman Prediction
Furman has an opportunity to silence the doubters and make up some significant ground in the Southern conference on Sunday. They welcome the UNCG Spartans into their arena for a chance to rise up to second place if they can pull off this “upset.” The oddsmakers wouldn’t exactly call it an upset for Furman, though…
The Paladins are hovering around (-175) on the moneyline against one of the better mid-majors in the country this season. If you look at every college basketball spread today, the general consensus would be that Furman is getting the most line respect out of any mid-major (besides maybe the Mount, but they’re playing Siena it doesn’t count). Why is a 12-10 fourth-place Furman team catching steam against a UNCG team that’s already beaten them this season?
I’m willing to bet the Paladins are catching steam for a reason. This team has high expectations this offseason, but Marcus Foster missed two big stretches of the season. Once their best player returned to the lineup in January and settled in, this Furman team started playing like the team we’ve been waiting for all year.
Like I mentioned earlier, Greensboro has already beaten Furman this season. If they were going to sweep the season series (which is nearly impossible to do in these mid-major conferences), they probably wouldn’t be an underdog after beating them by 10+ points in January.
It’s been a great season for Mikel Brown-Jones and the UNCG Spartans, but this is the time of the year when the dominant mid-major programs start playing their best basketball. Furman has the better coach, offense, and will be the home team with revenge on their mind. This time, they will have their star guard in their backcourt, too. Back the Paladins on the moneyline; don’t fear the juice, embrace it.
