Dayton vs. Saint Joe's Prediction
Dayton has been one of the best mid-majors in the country this season, hence why they find themselves in the AP Rankings. They are going to have their hands full tonight though, as they’ll be hitting the road to face a much quicker team. Dayton runs at a snail’s pace, and Saint Joes has one of the quickest tempos in the A10. This will be a battle of two completely different play-styles.
I typically side with the home team in spots like this, especially if they are an underdog. There most common way we see teams pull off upsets in college basketball is when a team with a completely different play-style makes the favorite uncomfortable. That is exactly how I see this game playing out. Saint Joes is going to push the tempo, and if they get out to a hot start, I don’t see Dayton pulling off the comeback.
This is the biggest home game of the season for Saint Joe's. Hagan Arena will be rocking, and if Erik Reynolds II gets out to a hot start, the Hawks will pile-on the points on their home floor. This Saint Joes team is 10-2 at home this season, one of the better home teams in the country. This will be Dayton’s toughest road test of the season in conference play.
You couldn’t ask for a worse matchup for the Flyers in this spot. They have a matchup against a VCU team that’s beaten them ten out of the last 14 times they’ve played on Friday. This is a massive lookahead spot for the Flyers, and if they don’t take the Hawks seriously, they will lose this game outright.
I think we can all agree that this spread looks short, but it’s for good reason. The Hawks have a prime matchup to earn a massive first quarter win as they continue to try and keep their auto-bid hopes alive. If they win this game tonight and take care of business for the rest of the season, they’ll have a chance.
St. Joseph’s has one of the most underrated backcourts in the country, led by star guard Erik Reynolds II. Let’s not forget that Lynn Greer III transferred in from Dayton after his freshman season. I’m sure he will be extra-motivated to defeat his former team at home tonight. Back Saint Joes at home on the spread, and I’ll meet you at the cash counter. The Hawk Will Never Die.
