Seahawks vs. Steelers odds

This game feels like a boring, slow-paced slog, with Russell Wilson out and a pair of teams that would prefer to run the ball. Pittsburgh has been throwing at a decent rate so far this year, and they have been willing over the past few years to go extremely pass heavy when trailing, but this past week we saw a better indication of what we’d heard all offseason — Ben Roethlisberger threw just 25 passes as they ran the ball 35 times in their first win since Week 1.

Seattle has of course limited Wilson’s ability to throw effectively throughout his career by eschewing early-down and non-obvious passing situations to lean heavily into the run, then asking Wilson to bail them out in trailing scripts in the second halves of games. It’s always been a testament to Wilson’s ability that he manages to still be a statistically strong player and help Seattle win games despite these trends, but he won’t play in this game, and Seattle seems likely to only lean further into this suboptimal play style with Geno Smith under center.

It’s easy to see why this game has the lowest total in Week 6. There are reasons for optimism — Seattle’s defense has been horrendous, and Roethlisberger looked better in Week 5, making some decent downfield throws and looking more like the aging-but-still-somewhat-effective quarterback we saw across the past few seasons, rather than the looks-literally-incapable-of-completing-a-pass-downfield version from 2021’s first month. The Steelers still sit 27th in the NFL in passing success rate, and 30th in rushing success rate, but the matchup will presumably help, as Seattle has allowed more yards to opposing offenses than any team so far in 2021.

I want to take the under in this game, but Roethlisberger does have playmakers at wide receiver in Diontae Johnson and Chase Claypool, and the Seahawks can’t cover anybody. I expect Pittsburgh to score, and then Geno Smith showed in relief last week that he’s still a gunslinger in a way that could lead to more points if he’s asked to turn it loose late, whether that be big plays from Seattle’s own playmaking WR duo or potential defensive touchdowns for the Steelers.

But I like the first half under, as I think both teams will run the ball a decent amount early. For the game, I’m laying the points, betting on Pittsburgh’s still solid defense as the best unit in this game.
