Sony Open First-Round Leader Predictions

We’re on to the second week of the 2024 PGA Tour season, as we stay in Hawaii this week for the 2024 Sony Open. This week, Waialae Country Club in Honolulu will play host, as the world’s best will look to overpower this small resort-style course beginning on Thursday morning from The Islands.

Not one of the PGA Tours elevated events, we have a relatively weak field this week in terms of star power, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be great action. Defending champion Si Woo Kim returns to the course this year, following up a T25 at The Sentry last week in a great start to the season. New Tour sensation Ludvig Aberg will also be on hand, as he makes his Sony Open debut alongside Tyrrell Hatton who is also here for the first time.

Let’s take a closer look at the rest of the field, and three guys I think could get off to a hot start out of the gates.

Sony Open Picks

Ludvig Aberg +3000

If you aren’t yet familiar with the name Ludvig Aberg yet, now would be a time to get familiarized. The young Suede parlayed his success over the summer in the 2023 Ryder Cup for Team Europe with a splash on the PGA Tour, winning the RSM Classic in November. In fact, Aberg had finished T14 or better in eight straight events prior to this 47th-place finish last week at The Sentry.

To show the potential of his game, Aberg finished 47th despite shooting a 63 (-10) on Sunday. With the skill levels of the charts throughout his game, expect a strong bounce back here from Aberg as he gets back on track following the slow start.

Russell Henley +4000

Henley put his name on the map here in Honolulu in 2013, winning the event in his first sponsored start on the PGA Tour. He had a chance to win here again two years ago, losing in a playoff following a collapse on the back nine on Sunday. In his past 12 rounds here, no one is better than Henley, who comes in with an average score of 65.9 over that time.

One of the best wedge players in the world, there is a reason Henley has excelled here so much, his game fits this place perfectly. Look for a hot start and for him to be in the mix come Sunday in Hawaii.

Eric Cole +4000

The Rookie of the Year from 2023 got off to a slow start last week at The Sentry, but got better each day to finish inside the top 15 before it was all said and done. One of the best short game players in this field, look for Cole to go low once again this week at The Sony.
