2024 Farmers Insurance Open Prop Bets: Can Mackenzie Hughes, Justin Suh Shine at Torrey Pines?

It was nearly the perfect week for the prop bets at the American Express. We had Chan Kim comfortably land the Top 40 bet after an excellent performance saw him finish T14th. It looked like Harrison Endycott was set to join him, but a double bogey on the last dropped him from T25th to T39th. If your bookmaker pays out on ties then happy days, if not, then it's a major chop of our returns. I had to endure the chop, even so, it was a profitable week with two returns from two.

We stay in California this week for the Farmers Insurance Open at Torrey Pines. The course rotation is still in order, with one round being played at the North course and three rounds at the much tougher, world-renowned South course.

Below I've targeted two players to chance in the Top 20 market.

Farmers Insurance Open Picks

Mackenzie Hughes Top 20 +450

Mackenzie Hughes might not be the first name anyone thinks of when profiling for Torrey Pines. He doesn't boast the longest driving distance, he's just below tour average, nevertheless he can easily make up for that in other areas. He has an excellent short game, his touch on and around the green is superb, and that always comes in handy around Torrey Pines. Hughes' record in this event isn't anything special, his best place finish was T29th back in 2019.

Although, he did lead the field here going into the final round of the US Open back in 2021. That's a big lead to sleep on and the occasion did get to him as he shot 77 to finish 15th. Even so, he has proven he can play Torrey Pines in its toughest form. Hughes is also in excellent form at the moment; he closed out the year with a 7th place finish in Mexico, and was the runner-up at the RSM Classic. His only appearance this year came at the Sentry, where he finished 25th and closed with a round of 64. He comes into this week in excellent form and looks to be a lively longshot.

Justin Suh Top 20 +450

Former no. 1 amateur, Justin Suh has started his year with two disappointing missed cuts. He has been a little unfortunate, narrowly missing them by a shot or two. He got off to a slow start at both the Sony Open and the American Express, which ultimately costed him. Suh missed the cut by a shot last week, despite a rallying effort in round 2 and 3. He fired a round of 66 on the tougher Stadium Course, ranking 4th tee to green and 5th on approach. That is much more like what we are used to seeing from this brilliant ballstriker. I'm hoping he can carry over that momentum into this week. He has played well at Torrey Pines in the past, improving on every visit. Suh finished 20th in this event last year, and had a similar start in his first two events. The tougher scoring conditions should suit him, it will take the pressure off the flatstick and reward better ballstriking.

The Californian home game angle is a bit of stretch, seeing as he calls Las Vegas home now. He was also brought up in San Francisco, which is at the other end of the state. I'm sure there will be some extra motivation to play well in his home state regardless, especially off the back of two frustrating missed cuts. Justin Suh had an incredibly steady first year on the PGA Tour. He made lots of cuts, had four top 10's, with the standout result being the T6th at the Players Championship. I'm expecting him to progressively get better and breakthrough this year. The two narrowly missed cuts have added a bit of value on him this week, and I fancy him to bounce back with a strong performance.
